Nostalgic Memories of Stepping Stones in Professional Career!

This date from 18 years afar on 10th Sep 2007 evokes really significant memories as I embarked on my professional career with Price Waterhouse as an article assistant with M/s Lovelock & Lewes in accordance under the Chartered Accountants Regulations Act of 1949. It is pretty special as it was the first ever experience of working anywhere and also earning your first ever buck. I recall my first stipend received of Rs 4900/- (7000*21/30) credited to HSBC Bank, R K Salai branch with no TDS deducted as yearly salary back then was under the minimum threshold slab of Rs 1,00,000😀. I also know for a fact that I had pizza for lunch at the Pizza Corner Nungambakkam outlet with couple of fellow article-ship mates on that memorable Monday from donkeys years ago😋.

It was my only stint with Audit in life but nascent memories always stay close to your heart. PwC has moved so many offices within Chennai since then but there'll always be a soft corner for that particular space located on:
#32, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600 006, Phone 044 42285000

It's pretty insane to think that 18 years has just flown like a dream. As I ended my foray with this illustrious organisation back then in 2010, I penned a limerick on my last day expressing my sincere thanks to the folks that I worked with in an "AABBA" style as follows:

As I step into the twilight,
Experiences to remember till the end of my light,
Its you the people who've made it really possible,
By making this journey of mine truly memorable,
Thanks a ton for making my light shine bright !:)

Gosh, time flies but the memories linger forever!

Cricketing Nostalgia Edition - Test Cricket of 2002, ODI WC 1999 & beyond

We were in the process of disposing off old items in the house when an old notebook running more than a quarter century caught my attention. I was quite fascinated to see that I had documented handwritten scorecard of all ODI matches played during the 1999 World Cup along with plenty of other notes pertaining mainly towards cricket, a bit of movies and some random scripts.

This was much before the advent of blogging came into existence. I recall around the late 1990s and early 2000s, most homes didn't even have a personal computer and it was only around the early 2000s that internet came into existence with the good old net cracker dial up edition which used to take quite a while to connect.

I had also incidentally penned a summarised version of the year 2002 that played out in test cricket chronicling on the major events that took place during the year. I couldn't beleive it myself that I took the pains to write about test cricket decades back when I was a wily teenager hooked on to the sport in a major way. Also looking at penning scorecards from cricket matches noted down from newspapers brings back a lot of vintage memories.

I am producing verbatim my write up of the year 2002 that was for Test cricket and sharing my hand written documentation of the 1999 ODI World Cup match played between India and Pakistan on the 8th of June 1999. A quarter century has passed since these events have occurred and looking back evokes memorable memories growing up in Chennai and falling in love with this wonderful sport of cricket.

2002 - The Year that Was

2002 will go down in history as one of those years in which bat completely dominated the ball. It was also a year full of world records. Adam Gilchrist obliterated Botham's record to score the fastest double century. In a matter of few days, he found that his own record was broken by Nathan Astle. Incidentally Astle broke Gilchrist's record by 59 balls getting to his double ton of a mere 153 deliveries. Michael Vaughan scored the second highest runs in a calendar year ever with 1481 runs. The record still belongs to Viv Richards who amassed 1710 runs in 1976. If you thought test cricket was boring think again. Sri Lanka's 509 runs scored in a day against Bangladesh is the highest score scored by a team in a day in test history. Also other notable achievements include Inzamam Ul Haq's 329 vs New Zealand which was the highest test score ever by a Pakistani. The score also stood 10th on the all time list. Rahul Dravid became the fourth batsman in test history to score 4 consecutive hundreds in as many innings. Bowlers couldn't make much of an impact but still there were a few important milestones set. Muralitharan and McGrath became the 7th and 8th bowlers respectively to join the 400 wicket club. Muralitharan also equalled Hadlee's world record of 36 five wicket hauls. Shane Warne went second on the all time list for most wickets taken. Sachin Tendulkar joined the illustrious club of all those who have scored over 8000 test runs. He also went past Donald Bradman's record of 29 test centuries. Now he is in second position in the list of most number of centuries scored behind Sunil Gavaskar. For the first time in test history two teams India and New Zealand got bowled out for less than 100 in their respective first innings. In spite of this feat 2002 will be remembered as a year for the batsmen.

3 Spine Chilling Sporting Thrillers to round off 2022

The year 2022 was writ large and abuzz with sporting events aplenty from different nooks and corners of the world. I would like to particularly single out 3 remarkable days which are all Sunday showdowns apparently from 3 different fields from the sporting calendar that hold a special place in the heart. Incidentally 2 of these took place in the perennially loved sporting city of Melbourne in Australia with the third being a masterpiece from the Middle Eastern region of Doha in Qatar. Also 2 of these were Grand Finales and the other just a group stage encounter but totally worth it's weight in gold.

The sports in question happen to be cricket, tennis and football. Cricket is a sport that I have followed since perpetuity by constantly keeping a tab on the different series taking place in various parts of the world. Tennis as a sport has largely been about viewing the Grand Slams and a little bit of the big ticket Masters events. Also I've keenly followed the progress of three of the most influential tennis players not just of this generation but of all time viz Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. When it comes to Football, it's about largely being in sync with club events such as Premier League, Champions League etc. but more importantly about keeping track of major country events such as Euro, Copa America and especially the World Cup that takes place once every 4 years.

The year of 2022 produced some vintage rippers from these 3 historical sports. The uncanny but common theme prevailing across these three memorable matches is the fact that they all looked like being just another typical sporting match up with sudden twists and turn of events resulting in a multitude of ebbs & flows effectively culminating and eventually catapulting these matches into virtual all time classics and going down the annals as contests to recollect for a lifetime.

The architects engineering these rip snorters happen to be celebrated names from these 3 sports viz Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi and Virat Kohli. Ironically they even happen to be born in back to back years of 1986, 1987 and 1988 respectively. Their exploits in the sporting battle under immense pressure also addresses the adage of "Class is Temporary, Form is Permanent" in a resounding manner. They were all under the hammer faced with extreme adversity and that is when they perfectly exhibited their caliber paving way for their fans to go into raptures and capping off a win to cherish for eternity.

Thus, an ode to three heart thumping chest pumping spine chilling tearjerkers that truly define the character of what could be termed as sporting blockbusters of 2022 includes the following:

1) Tennis - Australian Open Final - Rafael Nadal defeated Danii Medvedev - Sunday, 30th Jan 2022 - Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia

2) Cricket - ICC T20 World Cup Group Stage - India defeated Pakistan - Sunday, 23rd Oct 2022 - Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne, Australia

3) Football - FIFA World Cup Final - Argentina defeated France - Sunday, 18th Dec 2022 - Lusail Stadium, Doha, Qatar

1) Sport: Tennis, Event: Australian Open Final, Architect: Rafael Nadal

Even before the start of a ball being hit by a racquet, the whole tournament was mired in controversy with defending champion and 9 time winner Novak Djokovic barred from participating due to vaccine reasons. This paved the way for Rafael Nadal to up his game and reach the final yet again. For starters, this had been historically Rafa's worst performing Grand Slam and he had come a cropper many a time losing agonizing finals to his nemesis Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in the past. In the final was looming large the lanky Russian Medvedev who had just beaten Novak Djokovic in the previous Grand Slam final contested which was the US Open of 2021 thus preventing Nole from winning all 4 Grand Slams in the same year and also establishing that the Big 3 remained tied at 20 each in the Grand Slam race. Medvedev was clearly the favorite for this contest and he got the ball rolling right from the beginning ambushing Nadal from the word go. Having taken a 2 set lead and with a break in the third, it all looked more or less a formality before the beast mode being activated all of a sudden by the rampaging bull from Spain. Nobody knew from where Rafa got the energy to fight but what happened in the next couple of hours was sheer herculean brilliance from Nadal as he staved up point after point taking the match to a decider and finally sealing it 7-5 in the fifth set. Rafa was overcome with emotion with the turnaround being absolutely astonishing. Rafa also eclipsed the Grand Slam count to become the first man to go to 21 Grand Slams in a bitter sweet title triumph putting all past demons to rest and exceedingly elevating his fighter ship qualities to a zenith level perhaps that could sparsely ever be comprehended. Rafa Nadal would no doubt go down as the greatest clay court player ever to have donned the game but this win in a surface not supposedly his favorite and the manner of victory virtually rising from the Ashes will go down seemingly as one of his sweetest and perfectly epitomizes the hallmark of a champion showcasing the art of what a fightback and comeback is all about.

2) Sport: Cricket, Event: Ind vs Pak T20 World Cup Group Stage, Architect: Virat Kohli

India vs Pakistan clashes always attracts the eye balls and this one was billed to be a biggie and turned out to be a bombastic blockbuster. The Melbourne Cricket Ground which is one of the oldest and biggest stadiums in the world was all ecstatic having packed an audience of over 90000 cheering on for their respective teams. The 'G' as you call it was witnessing an India vs Pakistan World Cup game after 30 years since the 1992 ODI World Cup and the excitement was palpable with it being a showdown one just couldn't resist. Coming to some background information, India had an enviable winning record against Pakistan in World Cup encounters having won 12 out of 13 previous contests before this one. It was actually 12 wins on the trot for India but however Pakistan had finally broken the deadlock by literally tearing apart this unsavory record by recording a win in emphatic fashion through a commanding 10 wicket romp of their opponents in the last World Cup of 2021. The World Cup hoodoo against India which was plaguing them for so long had been arrested and Pakistan seemed to be on top once again for large portions of this game. After scoring a respectable 159, they had India on the mat by ripping through India's top order and placing them in a precarious position of 31/4. Kohli and Hardik did try to salvage the ship through a steady partnership but the required run rate was just oozing beyond acceptable levels. India needed an almost improbable 48 to win off the last 3 overs when Virat Kohli suddenly activated God Mode. His dispatchment of back to back sixes off Rauf was some of the cleanest hitting ever witnessed. Ashwin finally hitting a straight boundary off the last delivery to signal an Indian victory had the crowd go into euphoria and dancing in delight. India had pulled off a victory of unparalleled proportions which looked way beyond the bridge at one point but one man Virat Kohli through his sheer will and magnificent batsmanship made it happen. With just this one knock, Virat had avenged all his detractors who had called for his axing by constructing a T20 knock for the ages in such a high pressure taxing environment. Though this was only a group stage game, this victory would rank as one of India's finest ever in the T20 format and one to savor for a long time to come.

3) Sport: Football, Event: Arg vs Fra FIFA World Cup Final, Architect: Lionel Messi

The FIFA World Cup of 2022 was the 22nd edition to have been staged with its existence going back almost a century back to 1930 when the initial World Cup was held in Uruguay. It was the first ever World Cup to be held in an Arab nation and just the second World Cup to be held in Asia. This was also the first World Cup ever to be conducted during the end of the year with almost all World Cups prior to this being staged around the middle of the year. The event courted a lot of controversy for some of the event handling but ended up being a World Cup to remember especially with so many smaller known unfancied teams toppling big giants of the game. The final was perhaps a testimony to signify that the best had been reserved for the last and boy oh boy what a game of epic proportions it eventually turned out to be. That however wasn't the case for more than 3/4th of the game with Argentina literally dominating the field of play and what looked like a resolutely comfortable victory for Albiceleste turned out to be an almost absolute nightmare at the end. The peaks and troughs foreseen right from when France were 0-2 down to equalizing at 2-2 before taking it to extra time only for Argentina's talisman Lionel Messi to get the lead back again at 3-2 only giving away immediately to a late penalty scored by Frenchman Mbappe completing a terrific hattrick to make it to 3-3 and then once again the drama of the penalty shoot out which Argentina finally managed to scamper through was all jaw dropping stuff of the highest order. Those last 45 minutes of the game was not just intense but also insane with fans shuffling for breath not knowing what was going to happen next. It was breathtaking to witness the sea of events which just kept going berserk all over the place. It felt like this game should really have not had a loser but in the end it was heartbreak for France and pure ecstasy for Argentina who had reclaimed the World title after 36 years making Buenos Aires go in to a frenzy. Argentina also managed to avenge their defeat to France who had knocked them out in the previous World Cup of 2018 in the pre quarterfinal stage. In the end Football was the winner and the entertainment that was got to witness was monumental to say the least. Lionel Messi capped of his career with the one silver lining that was missing in his kitty and the one that he so badly wanted viz the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy. This also enabled him to match the feat of his illustrious countryman Diego Maradona who last won the World Cup for their beloved country way back in 1986. The final held on 18th December 2022 was one of the last sporting events of the calendar year and it was a treat for everyone to witness this rip roaring sporting spectacle.

2022 was certainly a year for the sporting fraternity with plenty of highs and lows. There were many memorable moments and a plethora of records that had been smashed over the course of the year. The 3 matches picked to represent their respective sports not only act as testimony to the greatness produced but also stand as true torchbearers that will testify the leap of time.

Nostalgic World Cup memories recirculated after 23 and a half years

There are certain memories etched vividly in the mind and one such is the NZ vs Eng clash on Feb 14th 1996. I started following cricket seriously around the autumn of 1994 and the 1996 world cup happened to be my first big ticket tournament experience as a fan.

I was so excited about the Wills World Cup being staged in the sub continent and had done a thorough homework pertaining to the history of the past 5 world cups thanks mainly to a red covered book of Gulu Ezekiel 'The Story of World Cup Cricket' which gave a brief synopsis along with score lines of all the previous editions from 1975-1992.

The world cup in 1996 opened with the New Zealand vs England clash and as it was a school going weekday, I recall rushing back as soon as the last bell rang at 2:45 pm from P. S Senior Sec School, Mylapore to scamper home to watch a closely contested tussle which NZ held on to sneak through thanks largely to a platform laying hundred by Nathan Astle.

Over the years since 1996, England's performances have nose dived in world cups with them hardly ever putting even a meek foot forward whereas the Kiwis have consistently managed to get to a top 4 finish in most of the events gone by with even a final run finish in the last Trans Tasman edition in 2015.

And now almost 23 and a half years and 7 world cups later nostalgia is recirculated as these very same teams who I witnessed playing a world cup game for the first time in 1996 are locking horns with each other to earn their maiden World cup triumph. May the best team win!

♪♫♬♯♭ 25 Musical Years of A R Rahman! ♪♫♬♯♭

During my growing up phase in the 90's, there were 2 fields which attracted me immensely. One being cricket and the other music. 2 gentleman in parallel world's, Sachin Tendulkar and A R Rahman (incidentally both No. 6's ðŸ˜‰) were going about their work in supreme fashion which incidentally criss crossed with my childhood and that had an immense impact on me. Looking back it's hard to believe that 25 years have elapsed since ARR's advent in the musical space.
Personally I have a sugary soft corner for the early and mid 90's compositions where the melodies were simple and sound was profound making him capture a whole generation to dance to his waves. The alternations in the tones creating an unexpected fulminant billowing out from nowhere causing ripples in the minds of the listeners was his true hallmark. His entry was revolutionary and he shook the nation by storm. On our 70th year of independence, we also celebrate 25 musical years of AR Rahman who started his journey with Roja.
I just tried a small sample of some of his vintage 90's compositions which hold a special place in my heart. I am an absolute abecedarian and play purely based on hear. Just did a random unplugged of some of his songs with few own gimmicks thrown here and there. It was a little difficult to play bits and pieces of around 15 songs at a stretch but just tried whatever possible based on my limited expertise. This is at best amateur but I hope it wasn't all that bad. Presenting a small tribute to the man and his music.

5 years of Andrum Indrum Endrum - Ilaiyaraaja Live in Concert

5 years ago on this very day Wednesday 28th Dec 2011, a musical tsunami swept us all away and it was such a privilege to soak in the droplets of the rain of sound. Each one of us who were present at Nehru Indoor Stadium experienced an evening to remember for a lifetime.
We were all swaying and dancing internally to the tunes being performed by the magician along with his sterling orchestra and troop of singers. That enakku ariyama mesmerising feel was just too much to take with the music captivating the siege of people assembled to witness this spectacle.
The introduction of Raaja entering in singing Janani Janani, the acoustic brilliance and the 3 hand tap thigh beat of Paruvame, violin virtuosity unleashed in Sundari Kannal, the legend Balamurali Krishna at 80+ enthralling the stage with the Reeti Gowlai based Chinna Kannan Azhaikiraan, the full octane energy blast of Madai Thirandhu to just name a few memorable moments. We didn't even mind KJ Yesudas missing the Charanam in order to hear the mind boggling repeat interlude of Poove Sempoove (napaasai max) and that most cherished moment of witnessing the 3 legends born in the 1940's IR, SPB, KJY sharing the stage together to perform Kattu Kuyilu from Thalapathi was epic goosebumps. It was one astonishing musical concert and when SP Balasubramanyam ended the show symbolically with Ilamai Idho Idho at 12 in the night, that was when it hit us that we were privy to one of the finest musical event's performed in Chennai.
I have attended plenty of concerts before and after but nothing even falls within a patch of 'Endrendrum Raaja'. The way the music unfurled on that day was marvellous and it was truly a blessing being there. It was almost 5 hours of musical hysteria and most of the audience were in sheer disbelief to know what hit them.
Raaja's music will always be a constant in life but being there experiencing live unadulterated pristine music right from the soul of the heart is an all together different experience. Kudos to the team for pulling off this great musical heist. You just didn't want this soiree to ever end. A redux of 5 years since the day the musical avalanche blew us all away.

Remembering JJ!

There are some personalities who travel parallel along your life in an unobtrusive way but you can never really take away your presence from them. JJ was synonymous in my life in some form or the other and she has always remained an integral part in the news from as far as I can remember. There was an indomitable spirit about her which was reassuring and she infused that pride in you that you have a leader who is highly intelligent, brave and waxed eloquent in her speech.
Her life is a learning lesson for the number of challenges she faced till her very last breath. I see people everyday bloating about paltry achievements, here was a woman who braved a male dominated society and knew how to take the bull by the scruff of the horn with no fear whatsoever. The rich and the powerful trembled with fear of this lady who made it to the top of the perch all by her very own from literally scratch.
Hers was a checkered career with plenty of ups and downs and she was designated by God to be a truly 'special' one. You may have loved or hated her but it was simply impossible to ignore her. She will forever be remembered in the annals of Indian history but it's just unimaginable to think she is not going to be amidst us anymore.
There was, is and will be only one Jayalalitha. The only way she can be replaced is by taking a re-birth. All sorts of eulogies will be enshrined about her but it doesn't take out the fact that she will forever be missed. A cultural icon and a legend, we can be pleased for living in Tamil Nadu during the life and times of this lioness Amma Jayaram Jayalalitha.

30 years of Mella Thiranthathu kadhavu!

It's 30 years to the day (Sept 12th 1986) since 2 Musical Messiah's - 'Mellisai Mannar and Maestro' joined together to present a monstrous and memorable soundtrack 'Mella Thiranthathu kadhavu'. It was a melange of magnificence with each of the compositions being special in their own right.
MSV's lilting tunes embellished with Raaja's orchestral layering gave it the much desired synchronisation which has continued to haunt the listeners down the years. Everytime I get to hear the interludes in Thedum kann Paarvai makes me gobsmacked. Vaa Vennila is such an everlasting delightful melody, Kuzhaloothum Kannanukku is the quintessential evergreen romantic lullaby, Dil Dil Manadhil shows how fun waltz can be, Ooru Sanam just the initial couple of lines is enough to transcend you to another plane and Sakarakattikku gives the rustic local folk twang.
It's hard to fathom powerhouses of any kind combining for a project and this movie is indeed a significant milestone in the annals of Tamizh Cinema for bringing 2 legendary Musical Mughals to work in a movie together for the first time. And boy, they made it count by delivering a monumental musical chapter, one for the ages.

Memories of Viru!

Virendar Sehwag played the game his way and the only way he knew right from the beginning to the very end. He put paid to his own downfall many a time but here was someone who didn't care for glory or reputation. All he knew was attacking batsmanship which brought glory to the fans watching him bat and reputation to Indian cricket for having produced their most destructive batsman ever.

It's still a mystery how he survived so long in test cricket and made runs all over the globe. The transition from a part time batsman who could bowl a bit to moving to the top of the order scoring over 8000 runs with an average of close to 50 speaks thunderous volumes of this Nawab from Najafgarh. Indian cricket history has had many opening batsman but the greatness chapter closes with just Sunny and Viru's names. And mind you Gavaskar was a proper technical gnaw who played the game how the text book demanded unlike Viru who re-wrote the textbook via his own style.

Once labeled a Sachin copybook, eventually you saw even Tendulkar change his game according to the times but Viru continued his aggressive streak not backing down one bit for anyone and being his own usual domineering self. He was an epitome of confidence and his self belief and no nonsense spirit was really admirable.

It was truly a sight watching him in a belligerent mood traumatizing international level bowlers of yore by swatting and making mincemeat out of them. Cricketers will come and go but there are few special one's who remain close to our heart and Virendar Sehwag was surely one among them. Thanks for all the excitement and entertainment of watching you all these years. Your presence on the cricket field may have vanished but the memories will forever live on!.

Orkut Memories - Everlasting but gone too soon!

Can't believe Orkut is soon going to be erstwhile and a thing of the past with effect from September 2014. The impact it has created is profound especially amongst those growing up in their teens and early adulthood at the time when this social media site was basking in full glory.

While it lasted, Orkut has provided so many fond moments and memories to cherish for a life time. Sharing a few of those wild and sweet bits of nostalgia in Tanglish style

- What fun it was to trade testimonials from friends :)

- Ogling into friends wall's and peeping to see with whom they were kadala pottyfying :D

- Getting embroiled in crazy banters and accusing each other all for a suppa matter just to prove the authenticity of who is having more number of friends :P

- Logging in from some other account to view a profile in order to avoid being seen on the recent visitor's list ;)

- Taking pride and time in updating profile hopelessly hoping that somebody awesome takes a visit to the profile :B

- Uploading the most wannabe photo ever as display pic :O (even now looking back gives the creeps)

- Communities la adi dhadi sandai mostly but also meaningful discussions once in a while

- Scrapping endlessly with fellow vetti's :Y

- Re-connecting with lost friends and forming friendship with people who you've never met and even knowing of certain love stories blossoming and taking shape via the Orkut route <3

Orkut has truly given a lot to smile and laugh about. Facebook maybe the all conquering emperor of Social Networking but it is Orkut who was the true trendsetter and which laid the foundation for the giant today that is Facebook. #RIPOrkut #Thanksfortheamazingmemories
