The Motions of the Planets and the Retrograde Effect

When seen from the perspective of an astrological horoscope, the Geo Centric theme acts as the key reference point. It is based on the assumption of keeping the apparent reference of Earth as the center point with all the planets revolving around it. Thus it is important to know the effect of how different planets affect while transitioning around the zodiac signs based upon keeping Earth as the base. However in reality as per the onus of the solar system it's always the planets circulating around the sun in the order of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

As Earth is taken as the base, we generally consider Mercury and Venus as inner planets whereas Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are considered as outer planets to the Earth's orbit. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto which are much further away are not considered within the parlance of Vedic Astrology but in essence they also need to be seen as outer planets. The Sun and the Moon which is revolving around the Earth are considered as the luminaries emitting source of light and have a significant role to play in the charter of a horoscope. They signify the soul and the mind respectively and play a crucial role in the decoding of a horoscope. In fact the Ascendant sign (the sign rising in the Eastern Horizon when an individual takes birth / event takes place), the Sun sign and the Moon sign are considered as the Big 3 in a horoscope and are extremely essential in deriving a number of areas to study within a horoscope. Their use both as individual points as well as a reference point based on which other planetary configurations are studied can exhibit wide avenues of analysis within the purview of a horoscope.

Daily Motion of Planets
Let's go about ascertaining the average motion of planets viewed in from the Earth's geo centric perspective. Though they all revolve around the Sun, we consider the center of the Earth as the base point and determine the movement travelled by the various planets when circulating around the Sun in the solar system. Please do note this is more or less the average daily speed whereas actual speeds can vary on a given day, depending on when a planet turns stationary and moves between direct and retrograde motion. Also listing down the highest and lowest daily speeds for those available cases.

Sun
Average Speed : 00°59'08"
Highest Speed :  01°03'00"
Lowest Speed :  00°57'10"

Moon
Average Speed : 13°10'35"
Highest Speed : 16°30'00"
Lowest Speed :  11°45'36"

Mars
Average Speed :  00°31'27"
Highest Speed :   00°52'00"
Lowest Speed : −00°26'12"

Mercury
Average Speed :  01°23'00"
Highest Speed :   02°25'00"
Lowest Speed : −01°30'00"

Jupiter
Average Speed :  00°04'59"
Highest Speed :  00°15'40"
Lowest Speed : −00°08'50"

Venus
Average Speed :  01°12'00"
Highest Speed :  01°22'00"
Lowest Speed : −00°41'12"

Saturn
Average Speed :  00°02'01"
Highest Speed :  08°48'00"
Lowest Speed : −00°05'30"

Though planets further than Saturn are considered within the purview of Vedic Astrology, documenting below the speeds of the planets much further from the Earth such as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto for the purpose of reference

Uranus
Average Speed :  00°00'42"
Highest Speed :  00°04'00"
Lowest Speed : −00°02'40"

Neptune
Average Speed :  00°00'24"
Highest Speed :  00°02'25"
Lowest Speed : −00°01'45"

Pluto
Average Speed :  00°00'15"
Highest Speed :  00°02'30"
Lowest Speed : −00°01'48"

When it comes to the nodes Rahu and Ketu, they normally transit in a reverse direction as seen from the Earth's parlance and their average daily motion is documented below:

Rahu
Average Speed :  −00°03'00"

Ketu
Average Speed :  −00°03'00"

For the purpose of a horoscope, the Ascendant plays a massively important role and this is deduced based on Earth's own rotation around it's axis which approximately takes about 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.09 seconds to cover the full span of 360°. Hence on an average day of 24 hours we can say that the Earth rotates 360° plus about an additional degree for the remaining about 4 minutes after completing one full rotation

Earth (For Ascendant)
Average Speed : 361°00'00"

Speed Order of Planets
Thus, when looked at the speed order, we can easily decipher that the Ascendant is the fastest being able to cover the entire paradigm of 360° covering all the zodiac signs in a day. This is followed by the Moon which covers on an average an entire Nakshatra span of 13°20'00". It covers the entire 27 Nakshatras spread across the 12 zodiac signs in just a little over 27 days. These are followed by the monthly planets viz Mercury, Venus and Sun all of which transit a zodiac sign in about a month's time. Then it is followed by the bi-monthly planet Mars which roughly transits a sign around once every two odd months. After this comes Jupiter which approximately transits in a zodiac sign for a period of a year. Then comes the nodes Rahu & Ketu which stay in a sign for roughly a year and a half and finally rounding up is Saturn which transits in a zodiac sign for a period of 2 and half years. One of the pertinent reasons why the planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are eliminated from the ambit of Vedic Astrology could be the fact that they take a very long time to complete a full round of the zodiac with these planets approximately taking about 84 years, 148 years and 236 years to complete one full cycle. That could be a potential reason as to why the impact may not be of much significance when seen from an individual horoscope as their transit time is exceedingly large.

Retrograde Motion
While studying the motion of planets, it is extremely prudent to also take into account the phenomena of the retrograde effect. Retrograde may mean moving backwards but in essence the planets don't really head backwards while revolving around the Sun in the solar system. But since we are looking at the movement of planets from the Earth's perspective, certain planets appear to be going backwards causing this phenomena. It in fact needs to be titled to as apparent retrograde motion since it's factored from the Earth's angle. The most widely used example of understanding this phenomena is by considering 2 parallel trains. For those placed in the faster train, it gives an illusory appearance of the slower train moving backwards and going in the opposite direction but in essence that's not the case and it is only moving slowly. This happens when the planets revolve around the Sun and undergo velocity changes at different paths in it's movement.

When considering Vedic Astrology, the Sun and Moon only move in the forward direction and do ever come into the picture of getting retrograde. The Rahu and Ketu almost always go in the reverse direction and hence they more or less always tend to be retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are mathematical pointers that arise when the orbit of the Moon cuts the ecliptic. True nodes tend to wobble around a bit causing some tilt in the opposite direction whereas Mean nodes always only tend to be retrograde as it's averaged out and calculated at a constant speed. For all practical purposes, we can safely consider Rahu & Ketu to be in retrograde motion most of the time. When it comes to the other 5 planets mainly in Vedic Astrology, we can split them as inner planets to Earth comprising of Mercury & Venus and the outer planets to the earth consisting of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. These planets tend to go retrograde at different times based on their varying velocity while orbiting in the solar system. This is the reason you would associate a negative sign when marking the slowest speed of these planets.

Types of Motions
As per the Geo - centric model, these 5 planets undergo 8 types of movement which are as below:

Direct Motion:

1) Manda - Direct and quickening or constant daily motion but somewhat slow moving

2) Mandatara - Direct and slowing or constant daily motion but very slow moving

3) Shiigra or Chara - Direct and slowing or constant daily motion but fast moving

4) Shiigratara or Atichara - Direct and quickening or constant daily motion but very fast moving

5) Kutila or Vikala - Planet is in a stationary motion which equates to defective/deficient motion

6) Sama - Direct and even comprising of smooth constant motion

Retrograde Motion:

7) Vakra - Moving backward quickly relative to its attainable daily daily speed

8) Anuvakra - Moving backward slowly relative to its attainable daily daily speed

The sequence of planets getting retrograde happen based on the following order:

- Kutila or Vikala - Planets are stationery

- Manda - Planets slow down but are in direct and quickening motion

- Sama - Planets are direct and in even motion

- Shiigratara or Atichara - Planets are in direct and quickening motion, or constant but fast

- Sama - Planets are in direct and even motion

- Shiigra or Chara - Planets are in direct and slowing motion, or constant but fast

- Mandatara - Plantets are direct and slowing, or constant but slow

- Kutila or Vikala - Planets are stationery

- Anu Vakra - Planets are retrograde but slow

- Vakra - Planets are retrograde but fast

- Anu Vakra - Planets are retrograde but slow

- Kutila - Planets become stationery again

Retrograde in Horoscope
Planets as we have seen become retrograde due to the relative speed undergoing a change during their motion in orbiting the Sun as seen from the lens of the Earth. Thus, planets in retrograde are generally said to be closer to the Earth and further off from the Sun. This holds especially true for the outer planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn and we tend to manually ascertain if a planet is retrograde just by seeing how many houses it's moved away from the Sun. When it comes to Venus & Mercury, they always tail gate with the Sun and this doesn't really hold true of it being farther off from the Sun and closer to Earth. Mercury and Venus becomes retrograde when it appears to move backward as seen from the planet Earth. Generally when Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are placed in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th houses from the Sun they tend to get retrograde with Mars being retrograde when placed approximately 140° from the Sun, Jupiter about 115° from the Sun and Saturn about 110° from the Sun.

Listed below are the approximate days in which the planets become retrograde:

Mercury - It takes approximately 88 days to orbit around the Sun. Goes into retrograde motion about 3 to 4 times in a year and lasts roughly for around 24 days (3-4 weeks)

Venus - It takes approximately 225 days to orbit around the Sun. Goes into retrograde motion once in about 18 months and lasts roughly for around 50 days (7 weeks)

Mars - It takes approximately 687 days to orbit around the Sun. Goes into retrograde motion once in about 26 months and lasts roughly for around 74 days (2.5 months)

Jupiter - It takes approximately 4333 days to orbit around the Sun. Goes into retrograde motion once in about 9 months and lasts roughly for around 122 days (4 months)

Saturn - It takes approximately 10756 days to orbit around the Sun. Goes into retrograde motion once in about a year and lasts roughly for around 140 days (4.5 to 5 months)

Vedic Astrology Perspective of Retrograde Planets
As per Vedic Astrology, planets in Retrograde mention are said to get Chesta Bala as per the six fold Shad Bala calculation in ascertaining strength of planets. Thus if the planets are in retrograde motion, they are said to be strong and powerful. When it comes to results, Retrograde can be loosely translated as crooked (Vakri) and these planets can tend to give results much against their usual nature. It can work two ways and thus expected beneficial attainment can turn into negative attainment and vice versa. Working with Retrograde planets can be a little bit tricky as it's not really easy to judge their results but however it needs to be remembered always that planets in retrograde motion are much stronger than when they are in direct motion.

The Planetary Cabinet - Nava Nayaka of Samvatsara

As per the Hindu calendar, a time cycle consists of 60 years (Samvatsara) and each of the Samvatsara's are associated with a specific name and the cycle keeps repeating every 60 years. The Samvatsara's by themselves are again divided into groups of 3 consisting of 20 Samvatsara's each with the trinity of Brahma (1 to 20), Vishnu (21 to 40) and Shiva (41 to 60) ruling a period of 20 years amidst these 60 years. The current time cycle beginning with Prabhava Samvatsara started in 1987-88 and will be completed with Akshaya Samvatsara in 2046-47 after which the cycle will once again reflect with Prabhava. The current operational year of 2023-24 happens to be the 37th and is titled 'Shobakrithu'.

The cycle of 60 is obtained from the relative positions of the two furthest planets in the sky as per Vedic Astrology namely Jupiter and Saturn which signify Dharma and Karma respectively. The orbital time taken by Jupiter to traverse the zodiac is approximately 12 years (1 year in each zodiac sign) and that of Saturn is 30 years (2.5 years in each zodiac sign). The least common multiple of 12 and 30 happens to be 60 and hence a time cycle consists of 60 years. It is also roughly the period in which both these planets will cross each other's part and hence the special significance with the number 60.

As per the Panchang, each year begins with the predictions of Sage 'Idaikadar' who delineates about what to expect in a particular year in the form of a verse. Some years from the Sanskrit names itself can be deduced to be good and certain years connote to be inauspicious for the world in general. For Sobhakritu year it is termed as a 'Mangalam' year that denotes prosperity and auspicious happenings taking place in general.

There is however some dissonance with respect to when exactly a year begins. As per the Lunar calendar which is largely adopted amongst Telugu and Kannada speaking population, it occurs during 'Yugadi' which takes place with the rise of Shukla Paksha Pratipada (Pratamai/Padyami) in Chaitra Masa. This normally takes place somewhere between the middle of March and April. However as per the Solar calendar which is mostly followed by Tamil and Malayalam speaking states, a year begins only with the ingress of Sun into the sign of Aries or Mesha Rasi known as 'Chithirai' ushering in the festival of Puthandu / Vishu which normally happens around 13/14/15th of April.

Speaking about the Panchang, there is an important concept called 'Nava Nayaka' which plays a vital role in determining various constituents and giving a breakdown on what to expect with respect to few important portfolios. Like how in politics we see different portfolios being occupied by ministerial candidates, in a similar vein we see different planets taking control of certain positions at the beginning of every Hindu year. The different portfolios which arise every year at the beginning of a Samvatsara happen to be:

- Raja : King (Overall Control)

- Mantri : Minister (Administration)

- Senadipati : Commander in Chief (Law and Order, Defence)

- Arghyadipati : Water (Water Levels, Prices of products, Finances)

- Meghadipati : Clouds (Rainfall, Kind of Weather)

- Sasyadipati : Agriculture (Agricultural Products, Underground Produce)

- Dhanyadipati : Grains (Food crops, Cereals)

- Rasadipati : Commodities (Essential Spices, Medicinal Drugs)

- Neerasadipati : Non Commodities (Metals, Gemstones)

The Raja is the top most person in the cabinet and most sought after leading the reigns. The Mantri is the next most important and adviser to the King in matters of general public health and lifestyle. The Senadipati is the leader of the army and able folly to the King with regard to law and weapons. Arghyadipati deals largely with the state of water levels but also controls the finance side of things such as the pricing of Agricultural produce. Meghadipati takes the portfolio of ascertaining the weather and estimating the amount of rainfalls expected to be prevalent. Sasyadipati details the prediction of the growth of crops and Dhanyadipathi is all about the production of grains. Rasadipati tackles the essential commodities sector and Neerasadipati manages metal produce including jewellery and precious stones.

The Nava Nayaka calculation occurs largely based on the position of Sun but the rulers of the respective 9 positions can be any of the 7 planets sans the nodes Rahu & Ketu. It is generally believed that natural malefic planets getting majority of the portfolios indicates administration being tough and strict during that particular year whereas presence of more beneficial planets ruling the reigns can designate more well being. The Nava Nayaka for all the 9 portfolios are calculated as below:

Raja:
Basis - Day of Tithi (Relationship between Sun and Moon based on angular distance)
Specific - Day Lord of Shukla Paksha Pratipada in Chaitra month

Mantri:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Aries (Mesha Rasi)

Senadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Leo (Simha Rasi)

Arghyadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Gemini (Mithuna Rasi)

Meghadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in Nakshatra
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Arudra Nakshatra (Tiruvadirai)

Sasyadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Cancer (Karka Rasi)

Dhanyadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Sagittarius (Dhanus Rasi)

Rasadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Libra (Thula Rasi)

Neerasadipati:
Basis - Day of Sun's entry in zodiac sign
Specific - Day Lord of Sun's entry in Capricorn (Makara Rasi)

Thus in 7 of the 9 cases, Nava Nayaka is determined based on the day of Sun's entry into different zodiacs namely Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Capricorn. For determining the 'Raja' it is based on the first Tithi of the brighter half that takes place when Sun is placed in Pisces Rasi and for obtaining 'Meghadipathi', it is the day when Sun enters Arudra Nakshatra.

There is also a concept of Pashunayaka which arises based on the planet that takes the reigns of the Raja position. Pashunayaka is decoded based on the following:
If Raja is Sun or Mars - Pashunayaka will be Yama
If Raja is Moon, Jupiter or Venus - Pashunayaka will be Sri Krishna
If Raja is Mercury or Saturn - Pashunayaka will be Balarama

Let's go about computing the Nava Nakaya planets of all the 9 portfolios for the current Samvatsara in operation which happens to be Shobakritu.

Raja:
Calculation: Day Lord of Shukla Paksha Pratipada Tithi during Sunrise in Chaitra month
Outcome: The Sun and Moon conjunct in Meena Rasi (Pisces) forming Shukla Paksha Pratipada Tithi which takes place on 21st March 2023 at 22:54 hours. This happens to be on a Tuesday. However since sunrise is not prevalent, we need to consider the day this Tithi occurs when sunrise is present which happens to be Wednesday, 22nd March 2023. Hence the Raja for the year is 'Mercury'
Result: Raja = Mercury

Mantri:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Aries (Mesha Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Mesha Rasi on 14th April 2023 at 14:27 hours. This happens to be a Friday. Day Lord for Friday is Venus. Hence Mantri for the year is Venus
Result: Mantri = Venus

Senadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Leo (Simha Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Simha Rasi on 17th August 2023 at 13:01 hours. This happens to be a Thursday. Day Lord for Thursday is Jupiter. Hence Senadipati for the year is Jupiter
Result: Senadipati = Jupiter

Arghyadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Gemini (Mithuna Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Mithuna Rasi on 15th June 2023 at 17:44 hours. This happens to be a Thursday. Day Lord for Thursday is Jupiter. Hence Arghyadipati for the year is Jupiter
Result: Arghyadipati = Jupiter

Meghadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Arudra Nakshatra (Tiruvadirai)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Arudra Nakshatra on 22nd June 2023 at 17:17 hours. This happens to be a Thursday. Day Lord for Thursday is Jupiter. Hence Meghadipati for the year is Jupiter
Result: Meghadipati = Jupiter

Sasyadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Cancer (Kataka Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Kataka Rasi on 17th July 2023 at 04:35 hours. This happens to be a Monday as per English Day but Sunday as per the Vedic Calendar since a Hindu Day begins from sunrise and ends during the next day Sunrise. However since the day is almost over, only Monday is considered for this portfolio with sunrise being prevalent. Day Lord for Monday is Moon. Hence Sasyadipati for the year is Moon
Result: Sasyadipati = Moon

Dhanyadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Sagittarius (Dhanus Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Dhanus Rasi on 16th December 2023 at 15:28 hours. This happens to be a Saturday. Day Lord for Saturday is Saturn. Hence Dhanyadipati for the year is Saturn
Result: Dhanyadipati = Saturn

Rasadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Libra (Thula Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Thula Rasi on 18th October 2023 at 00:59 hours. This happens to be a Tuesday as per English Day but Wednesday as per the Vedic Calendar since a Hindu Day begins from sunrise and ends during the next day Sunrise. However since the day is almost over, only Wednesday is considered for this portfolio with sunrise being prevalent. Day Lord for Wednesday is Mercury. Hence Rasadipati for the year is Mercury
Result: Rasadipati = Mercury

Neerasadipati:
Calculation: Day Lord of Sun's entry in Capricorn (Makara Rasi)
Outcome: The Sun transits into Makara Rasi on Saturday, 15th January 2024 at 02:13 hours. Hence Neerasadipati for the year is Moon
Result: Neerasadipati = Moon

Note:
It is important to note that a Vedic Day begins only from Sunrise as opposed to a standard English Calendar day which starts at 12AM. Generally the mean sunrise adopted is 6AM as that is considered to be the approximate standard time in which Sun rises within most places in India. Thus, it can be roughly assimilated that 6AM is Sunrise time and 6PM is Sunset time. While calculating Navanayaka, if any of the planetary transits takes place after 6PM, as per Surya Siddhantha only the next day is considered into the equation though as per Drik Siddhantha which deals with observable placement in the skies, it could have taken place in the previous day. This needs to be carefully looked at while determining Navanayaka portfolio.

Ayanamsa used for the calculation of Navanayaka is Lahiri Chitra Paksha and the place considered is Chennai, India. There could be a change in planetary portfolio based on the Ayanamsa adopted. Also for all cases of Navanayaka, since only the day lord is considered into the equation and since the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu do not rule any of the days, they do not hold ground to become the Navanayaka's for any of the 9 portfolios in operation.

Listed below is the current operational Samvatsara cycle that runs from 1987-88 to 2046-47.

The Methodology and Interpretation behind the Karma system of DNA Astrology

DNA Astrology has originated as a fairly recent system of Astrology and it has become quite prominent pretty quickly. Word goes that this form of astrology was apparently been practiced in the hilly regions of Tamil Nadu but it was brought out in the open by one Mr. Vishal Logeshwaran who was provided the secret formula of each Nakshatra being associated with a specific planetary karma and hence was born the concept of DNA Astrology approximately around the year 2017.

The underlying feature about DNA astrology is that it is not for prediction purposes. One may wonder then what's this all about because the basic foundation of astrology itself happens to be predictive based. DNA Astrology is all about genetical connectivity and studying patterns of an individual's karma imprints and deriving the course of action for a person in this lifetime. Based on the planetary positions, DNA astrology can draw insights about a person's personality and provide the required direction and guidance to follow in life.

A lot is inferred based on past life genesis and by studying and observing the DNA pattern linked to the birth chart, it helps to provide scientific clues on what areas are more suited and which are not when it comes to different facets of life. For instance, through DNA astrology, it would be possible to configure what kind of spouse and their particular profession one can get based on the planetary combinations present in one's chart. Knowing this, it would help for the individual to search in a particular zone rather than wasting time on futile efforts. For example, if the planetary positions in a horoscope states that getting a spouse in doctor profession is not genetically possible, it would be prudent not to search for a spouse in medical area and instead harness energies on searching for a spouse in allied professions indicated by DNA astrology.

One more thing to note is that DNA Astrology is an evolving science. In the inception, it was all about only the Nakshatras but it's much more broad based and connects the karma through various houses and planetary combinations present in an individual's horoscope. We will look below at how DNA karma is interwoven across different Nakshatras, planets, signs and houses.

Nakshatra Karma
The fundamental first focus is based on the default karma that an individual has when taking birth and this is assessed based on the Nakshatra of Lagna or Ascendant, the Nakshatra of Moon and the Nakshatra of the Lagna Lord or Ascendant Lord. Each of the Nakshatra has a planetary karma interlinked as seen below:

In the scheme of Nakshatras, it is seen that for all the Nakshatras there is a planetary karma associated except for Ketu. Ketu is considered as Moksha Karaka and hence no Nakshatra is subject to Karma of Ketu. Hence only the 8 planets from Sun to Rahu are associated with planetary karma when pertained to Nakshatras. The easy way to remember this is to associate every Nakshatra with the weekday order from Sunday to Saturday. Hence Ashwini is tagged to Sunday and Sun, Bharani to Moon and Monday and so on and so forth till Punarvasu is associated with Saturday and Saturn. After this we give the next Nakshatra of Pushya to Rahu and from then on the order repeats once again from Sun to Rahu. Sun, Moon and Mars alone have 4 Nakshatras linked to DNA Karma since the total Nakshatras are 27 and when divided by 8 planets, reminder is 3 and they get slotted to Sun (Poorva Bhadra), Moon (Uttara Bhadra) and Mars (Revathi). Listed below are the summary grouping of planets and the DNA Nakshatras associated.

DNA Karma of Sun - Ashwini, Ayilyam, Anusham, Pooratathi
DNA Karma of Moon - Bharani, Magam, Kettai, Uthiratathi
DNA Karma of Mars - Krithika, Pooram, Moolam, Revathi
DNA Karma of Mercury - Rohini, Uthiram, Pooradam
DNA Karma of Jupiter - Mrigaseerisham, Hastham, Uthiradam
DNA Karma of Venus - Thiruvadirai, Chithirai, Thiruvonam
DNA Karma of Saturn - Punarpoosam, Swathi, Avittam
DNA Karma of Rahu - Poosam, Vishakam, Sadayam
DNA Karma of Ketu - None

As an illustration, let's say one's Ascendant falls in the sign of Gemini in Punarpoosam Nakshatra and the Lagna Lord of Gemini which is Mercury sits in Revathi Nakshatra. Also let's say the moon sign falls in Sagittarius in the Nakshatra of Poorva Ashada. Hence it can be inferred that this person has the following planetary karma based on his birth chart:

Lagna Nakshatra : Punarpoosam - Saturn Karma
Lagna Lord Nakshatra : Revathi - Mars Karma
Moon Nakshatra : Pooradam - Mercury Karma

Thus, it can be inferred that this individual has a combination of Saturn, Mars and Mercury Karma. Sometimes a person can have only 2 planets as DNA Karma and at times it can be only one planet DNA Karma if the Lagna Nakshatra, Lagna Lord Nakshatra, Moon Nakshatra all fall in a particular Nakshatra ruled by the same planet. Eg. if Lagna Nakshatra is Krithika, Lagna Lord Nakshatra is Anuradha and Moon Nakshatra is Ashlesha then all of the three are associated exclusively with Sun Karma. In such a case the intensity of the DNA Karma can be more because influence is completely from a particular planet.

One more thing to note in the scheme of DNA Astrology is that when an individual is associated with a particular planetary karma, both the good and bad things tend to get accompanied. Karma is not always bad and it also tells about the good actions we have done in the past and hence this also has to be remembered and born in mind. For eg. if someone has Moon Karma, both positive and negative connotations can come across the individual with respect to Moon significations such as maintaining a fine relationship with Mother but at the same time getting impacted by advise from Mother. Likewise someone having Mercury Karma may be blessed with good communicative skills but the communication can also land him up in trouble in some way or other. Hence one has to be cognizant of this fact that a particular karma can end up acting both sides in the affirmative and in the non complying state.

Planet Karma
Apart from the Nakshatras being associated to a karma of a particular planet, the planets themselves are linked to the DNA karma of another planet. This is based on the concept of Birth Star of a planet taken from "Vichitra Jothidam". Based on the birth Nakshatra of each planet, we figure out the DNA karma of that planet and derive the planetary karma for each of the 9 planets including Ketu as seen below:

Sun : Birth Star Hastha - DNA Karma Jupiter
Moon : Birth Star Mrigashira - DNA Karma Jupiter
Mars : Birth Star Uthara Ashada - DNA Karma Jupiter
Mercury : Birth Star Dhanishta - DNA Karma Saturn
Jupiter : Birth Star Pushya - DNA Karma Rahu
Venus : Birth Star Magha - DNA Karma Moon
Saturn : Birth Star Revathi - DNA Karma Mars
Rahu : Birth Star Bharani - DNA Karma Moon
Ketu : Birth Star Ashlesha - DNA Karma Sun

Hence we can correlate that DNA Karma of Jupiter carries the blessing or curse of Sun, Moon & Mars whereas DNA Karma of Moon takes effect in the form of Venus & Rahu. DNA Karma of Sun is affected by Ketu, DNA Karma of Mars by Saturn, DNA Karma of Saturn by Mercury and DNA Karma of Rahu by Jupiter. Listed below is the full list of planets karmically associated for all 9 planets
DNA Karma of Sun : Ketu
DNA Karma of Moon : Venus, Rahu
DNA Karma of Mars : Saturn
DNA Karma of Mercury : None
DNA Karma of Jupiter : Sun, Moon, Mars
DNA Karma of Venus : None
DNA Karma of Saturn : Mercury
DNA Karma of Rahu : Jupiter
DNA Karma of Ketu : None

How this is to be interpreted is that based on the placement of a planet in the chart we can infer that it carries the DNA karmic registry of the planet connected. For instance wherever Venus is placed in the chart, it would exhibit the karmic traits of Moon and wherever Sun is placed it may showcase the significance of Jupiter for instance. As an example let's say Saturn is placed in the 1st house of a horoscope. In such a case it may normally be predicted that the person would be slow and carry a lazy gait much akin to Saturnian significations but since we know Saturn possesses the karmic connection of Mars, the individual may actually be aggressive and display Martian energy.

Sign Karma
The Zodiac signs are also affected by a DNA Karma based on the Moola Trikona placement of the respective planets. Not all signs carry a DNA karma since there are only 9 planets but there are 12 signs. Also each planets makes its office of responsibility in only one particular sign though it could be owning more than one sign. Lets look below at the zodiac signs carrying planetary karma

Mesha/Aries: Moola Trikona of Mars - DNA Karma Jupiter
Rishaba/Taurus: Moola Trikona of Moon - DNA Karma Jupiter
Mithuna/Gemini: Moola Trikona of no planet - No DNA Karma
Karka/Cancer: Moola Trikona of no planet - No DNA Karma
Simha/Leo: Moola Trikona of Sun - DNA Karma Jupiter
Kanni/Virgo: Moola Trikona of Mercury - DNA Karma Saturn and Moola Trikona of Rahu - DNA Karma Moon
Thula/Libra: Moola Trikona of Venus - DNA Karma Moon
Vrischika/Scorpio: Moola Trikona of no planet - No DNA Karma
Dhanus/Sagittarius: Moola Trikona of Jupiter - DNA Karma Rahu
Makara/Capricorn: Moola Trikona of no planet - No DNA Karma
Kumbha/Aquarius: Moola Trikona of Saturn - DNA Karma Mars
Meena/Pisces: Moola Trikona of Ketu - DNA Karma Sun

Hence DNA Karma of Jupiter is associated with the signs of Aries, Taurus and Leo, DNA Karma of Moon is linked with Virgo and Libra. DNA Karma of Saturn is also linked with Virgo. DNA Karma of Sun with Pisces, DNA Karma of Mars with Aquarius and DNA Karma of Rahu with Sagittarius. There is no DNA Karma of any sign associated with Mercury, Venus and Ketu. However for Mercury and Venus, it is said that 4th and 3rd house respectively influence the karma and hence taking from the default Kala Purusha order, we provide Cancer to Mercury due to it being natural 4th sign and Gemini to Venus due to it being natural 3rd sign. Thus a deviation is made to accommodate Gemini & Cancer sign whereas no planet has its DNA karma in the signs of Scorpio and Capricorn. Summarized below are the DNA Karma of planets and the zodiac signs influencing the karma

DNA Karma of Sun : Pisces
DNA Karma of Moon : Virgo, Libra
DNA Karma of Mars : Aquarius
DNA Karma of Mercury : Cancer
DNA Karma of Jupiter : Aries, Taurus, Leo

7th House : DNA Karma Moon
8th House : No DNA Karma
9th House : DNA Karma Rahu
10th House : No DNA Karma
11th House : DNA Karma Mars
12th House : DNA Karma Sun

This is also derived on similar lines as seen with the Moola Trikona concept of planets and based on the Kala Purusha order. Venus and Mercury are additionally provided DNA Karma for 3rd house and 4th house respectively based on observation in numerous horoscopes of natives having their 3rd and 4th house affected by DNA karma of these two planets.

DNA Karma of Sun : 12th House
DNA Karma of Moon : 6th House, 7th House
DNA Karma of Mars : 11th House

Interpretation of Planets as per DNA Karma

Sun:
Sun signifies Power, Authority, Ego, Leadership, Politics, Administration & Medical professions, Father figure etc. Those born with Sun DNA Karma, their family members will be involved in professions like HR, Admin, Principal, Team Leader, Higher Rank officials, Government Authority related etc. These individuals will naturally have traits towards the things which Sun signifies. They will be good healers and generally have an important reputation and standing. They could have an up and down relationship with their dads and may have some issue with Government authorities etc. In a horoscope wherever Sun is placed, it only points the direction but does not provide the result. Sun always orders and expects everyone to listen to it but does not like to listen to others. Sun also boasts about its qualities and this show off nature can put others off. Another thing to note is that it likes to showcase arrogance pertaining to the house where it is placed. If native is able to control these habits, it helps to curtail the negative karma associated with Sun.

Moon:
Moon signifies mind, feelings, Motherly figure, psychology, feelings, travel, water related things, professions associated with food & liquids etc. Those born with Moon DNA Karma, their family members would be involved in professions like Hotel, Catering, Groceries, Agriculture, Rice Mill etc. These individuals are the ones possessing strong mental strength but at the same time are the ones who also get mentally affected. Its in a similar vein when it comes to their relationship with mother. Wherever Moon is sitting, that house significations will always be up and down which means you may or may not get the result. Moon represents public culture, lifestyle etc. So how others decide that’s how Moon also acts. Moon karmic people always have mindset that others should not speak ill of them as they are very concerned about what the public or community thinks about them. It always denotes change and always tends to copy others. Moon is responsible for our conscious mind, attachments towards others through which it is clear that they cannot be without others and cannot think or do things of their own. In a way they put paid to their own selves. If individual is cognizant of these issues and takes care, the negative attributes can be taken care of.

Mars:
Mars signifies valor, courage, marriage initiation, younger siblings, aggression, uniform related professions, landed properties etc. It is common for those with Mars DNA Karma for their family members to be in professions like Police, Army, Construction, Civil Engineering, Sports field etc. People with strong Mars Karma mostly do their job pretty quickly. They also tend to get angry and irritated in a trifle. Relationships with younger siblings can be little cold and hence its good not to be too emotional with them. The place where Mars sits in the horoscope tells about the desire of birth. For instance if Mars is placed in 4th, it tells about comforts, education, vehicles etc. For those with Mars in 4th, their birth notion will be with respect to these significations. In issues signifying Land dealings, Asset Partitioning, Property Construction etc. those with Mars Karma can get affected a lot, hence its advisable to be careful with respect to investing money or dealing in such areas. Also it would be good to control stubbornness to reduce negative effects of Mars karma.

Mercury:
Mercury signifies communication, intelligence, education, documents, analytical mind, logic, inter caste love, friends, writing, maternal relatives etc. In families of Mercury DNA Karma, it is common to see people in the fields of finance, education, banking, authoring, printing, journalism, astrology etc. Mercury in general shows essential knowledge in various diverse fields. One thing to note is that in families of those with Mercury Karma, there could be extremities in the sense you would find people being extremely intelligent and at the same time there could be those who are dull headed and ignorant. With regard to marriage also its witnessed that with Mercury Karma, people marry very closely within families and similarly also marry complete strangers practicing different religions and being of another ethnicity. The approach to life for those with Mercury Karma will be very different than usual. They never come to a decision easily and keep oscillating between various choices. They always require an assurance and acceptance tends to be only with a condition. Mercury however shows flexibility and can bring control when needed. If the prevailing issues are understood and worked accordingly, the negative features can be brought down to an extent.

Jupiter:
Jupiter signifies children, teacher, religion, knowledge, divinity, spirituality etc. It is common in the families of those with Jupiter Karma to be in the fields of Teaching, Banking, Finance, Judge, Gold Business, Temple Priests etc. Some of the professions become similar with that of Mercury and it could be because Mercury connotes intelligence but Jupiter is about knowledge and wisdom. There is a great chance that people in Jupiter related professions can have expertise in their chosen field. There could be some issues with children especially the first born. In some way they may not be able to get along well or do much to their children. There can also be complications during delivery time or in bringing them up. Jupiter DNA Karma can also show financial misconducts, fund mismanagements etc. There is also a saying that Guru only shows the way but doesn't follow in the sense that Jupiter only advises, teaches or preaches but on it's own never follows the same as a role model. For instance, if Jupiter is placed in 9th, father will advise a lot saying this is good and this is bad but in his lifetime he would not have followed the same. Wherever Jupiter is placed, it also shows we haven't followed the Dharma or knowledge towards the same. Keeping these things in mind and working on those could alleviate the harmful effects of Jupiter DNA Karma.

Venus:
Venus signifies relationships, spouse, beauty, luxuries, entertainment, artistic talents etc. In families of those with Venus Karma, it is common to see professions related to cosmetics, beauticians, make up artists, costumes, fine arts such as music/movies/dance/drama, things to do with extravagance etc. They usually tend to mix along well with everyone and have a happy go lucky attitude. They are highly pleasure seeking and passionate about most things. They have a lot of emotional bonding and go with the flow without considering logic which tends to affects them a lot. They also have a lot of expectations which ends up disappointing them in the end. It is generally seen that people with Venus karma tend to have problems in relationships and marriage. They also are not able to enjoy their wealth to the fullest even if they are well off and tend to have a negative approach towards life. The place where Venus sits indicates the Kula Deivam karma. Also wherever Venus is placed, it suffers from Moon related dosh. For eg if Venus in 7th, partner will have some problem relating to the significations of Moon which could mean mind getting disrupted. If the negative attributes are kept in mind, the issues can be solved to a reasonable extent.

Saturn:
Saturn signifies profession, longevity, delays, handicap, elder siblings, labour etc. It is common to see families with Saturn Karma engaged in professions like labor jobs, working in hospitals, oil mills, iron, steel, ink, marketing, lawyers, drilling, mining etc. They are very hard working by nature but at the same time are also casual. They are also very honest in their dealings and take integrity very seriously. They also extend their helpful nature towards others. When it comes to taking a decision however they tend to stumble quite a bit. When it comes to profession, you can see both sides of the coin. On one end, it is possible to witness people who go on working for eons continuously with the scope of earning fame and money but at the same time even laggards could be seen not going for work for long or surviving in the same job for a lengthy duration of time without any growth prospects or development. Since Saturn is also the signifier of longevity, it is seen in families with Saturn Karma that there are two extremes when it comes to life expectancy. The areas in life in which we have not valued or where we have shown arrogance or pride, those areas will be under the control of Saturn. For eg Saturn in 2nd house, tells that we have not shown the right values in previous life pertaining to significations of that house. Anything related to Saturn we should not showcase to others. How much ever significations that Saturn show, if we are secretive with regard to dealing with it, that can be beneficial. However if we tend to portray the effects of the significations to outsiders it can end up backfiring. If these things are taken care off, negative effects of Saturn can be harnessed to some length.

Rahu:
Rahu signifies out of the box thinking, bitterness, multiple languages, unconventional, outcaste, foreign, gambling, illusions, larger than life persona, grandfather etc. Families of those with Rahu Karma indicates profession related to Electricity, Electronics, Chemical Engineering, Logistics, Travelling or Government transport related such as Road contracts, Airways, Roadways, Harbors, Bus Depot etc. Sudden happenings are very common with Rahu and it also indicates happening of uncertain events more than once. Rahu tells about those desires which were not satisfied in previous life. The place which Rahu sits, how much ever is obtained the satisfaction will not be there and there will be the urge to keep on wanting more and more. For instance if Rahu is placed in 4th house, those natives would never be happy with the possessions they possess with respect to education, properties etc. Even expectations with mother will be very high. If Rahu is joined with another planet, even significations with regard to that planet get impacted with extreme levels of desires. To limit the evil effects of Rahu, it would be good to exercise caution and not expect things beyond imagination.

Ketu:
Ketu signifies mystery, detachment, darkness, trouble, grandmother, fever, problems, cuts, mathematics, deep knowledge, conspiracy, black magic etc. Ketu can indicate jobs pertaining to tantric, healing, doctors, preceptors, dealing with locally sourced herbs/medicines, yogis, saints, occult, government posts, working with ropes/wires/cables etc. Ketu does not have any direct genetical connectivity on its own but wherever Ketu is placed in a chart it would exhibit the characteristics of Sun. Ketu tells about the responsibilities that were not completed in previous life. Whichever house it sits, how much ever we do with respect to that house, that house will not attain satisfaction because it is like a loan from previous life. For eg if Ketu in 5th, how much ever is done to children, returns don't come in fully. If in 4th mother will only see ones tasks done towards her as a responsibility but will not show appreciation. Hence one cannot expect a result from that house as it can only lead to further problems. Hence reducing expectations and not being sentimental with respect to the house in which Ketu is placed can help in warding off negative effects to a tolerable extent.

Interpretation of Signs as per DNA Karma

Mesha/Aries:
Whichever house appears as Aries in the horoscope, one will not be able to reap rewards out of the same. They will not be able to enjoy the benefits out of that house. For eg. Cancer Lagna - Aries happens to be the 10th house. These natives may not be able to benefit much from profession. It is better to get the things not done in your own name for betterment. As an instance, for a Capricorn Lagna born person, Aries comes as 4th house which relates to vehicles and properties. Such an individual in order to get the advantage should purchase these in someone else name.

Rishaba/Taurus:
Taurus house showcases ones virtues and blessings of wealth. Whichever house comes as Taurus for a native they will be able to enjoy the money related benefits and virtues with regard to the house significations. For eg. for a Libra Lagna native, Taurus becomes the 8th house and tells about one's in laws. It means that this native could receive benefits from spouses family. It could also mean these natives will receive favorable benefits from provident funds, insurance as they relate to 8th house. For say a Sagittarius Lagna, Taurus is their 6th house and they could benefit in competitive examinations.

Mithuna/Gemini:
Gemini house points out to secrecy and has tendency to spread rapidly. Thus anything pertaining to this house will spread instantly and go out as a secret. Whichever house comes as Gemini, it will expose the secretive matters with regard to its significations. Hence one may have to be extra careful when sharing sensitive matters. For instance, a Sagittarius Lagna native will have Gemini as its 7th house. Such natives should not speak in the open about relationships or their partner as it can spread in a wrong way. Similarly Taurus Lagna natives should be hesitant and maintain a stance in not disclosing much of their money matters as it can take a turn towards the wrong direction.

Karka/Cancer:
Cancer house pinpoints a floating propensity. The house which appears as Cancer will always be unsteady by nature and show up and down results. Anything which is hoped from that house may come or may may not come as expected. Cancer also tells about one's talents and abilities. Eg for a Gemini Lagna - Cancer happens to be the 2nd bhava. If they have chance to earn money in a particular field,  they need to grab it immediately otherwise they would need to wait a long time to obtain it again. For a Pisces Lagna native, Cancer happens to be 5th house relating to children. If these natives delay in wanting to have a child, when they really want to explore the option of having a child it may not happen in the normal manner and it could take more time due to the unstable trait of Cancer house.

Simha/Leo:
Whichever house comes as Leo, it will only show the direction but will not help. It also shows ones dreams and imaginations which means to say that the person will think deeply about that house significations and that would be first priority. Eg for a Pisces Lagna - Leo sign happens to be 6th bhava. If these people need a loan they would be asked to go here and there and get all sorts of advise but will not receive the actual help to process a loan. Hence Leo as a house will guide and show a path but will not come down and help. For a Aquarius Lagna, Leo is 7th house and deals with marriage matters. One can relate it to a matrimony portal which will show various alliances but ultimately contacting and realizing an alliance would not be done by the house in question.

Kanni/Virgo:
Whichever house comes as Virgo, it will show fights and issues pertaining to that house. It also showcases success and victory depending on the house signification. Eg for a Leo Lagna, Virgo happens to be the 2nd bhava. There will always be lot of jealousy and competition on these people with regard to money matters. For a Sagittarius Lagna native, Virgo is the 10th house and there will always be some fights and bickering with regard to their professional matters. They may eventually succeed in the work place but they have to encounter jealousy and accept matters spoken behind their back.

Thula/Libra:
Whichever house comes as Libra, they would need to give up something in order to obtain something else. It is the house of exchange or choices and explicitly has a give and take equation associated. The house which appears as Libra, that will also grant an experience to the native and they can also win contacts and influence pertaining to the house signification. Eg for Capricorn Lagna, Libra happens to be 10th bhava. These people can get life partner through the means of work or once they start working in a company. For Aries Lagna, Libra is the 7th house. In order to get a benefit from a spouse, one must be willing to leave something in order to get the desired benefit.

Vrischika/Scorpio:
Scorpio as a house can lure and provoke you to commit a mistake with respect to its house signification, hence one needs to be very careful about it. It will show you the way but end up spoiling and affecting you. Eg for a Pisces Lagna - Scorpio is 9th bhava. The father may ask you to do something in order to enjoy common benefits but it can backfire and end up misfiring. Similarly for a Taurus Lagna native, an advise from the spouse may seemingly be good but can end up misleading.

Dhanus/Sagittarius:
Sagittarius as a house can indicate transformations taking place with respect to house significations. It shows potential and leads one to go ahead when the chance is tapped. Eg for a Gemini Lagna,  Sagittarius happens to be the 7th house. The marriage of the native can signify some major transformations taking place in their lives. Likewise for a Leo Lagna, life can undergo a total transformational shift with the birth of child.

Makara/Capricorn:
Whichever house comes as Capricorn, there will always be plenty of work pertaining to that house signification. Work flow will be unceasing and virtually never ending. It however also shows development in work pertaining to that area. Eg for a Leo Lagna, Capricorn happens to be the 6th house of service. These people will always be having lots of work in their job which can also give them development. For Gemini Lagna, Capricorn is the 8th house and denotes occult and secretive matters. These natives would always be in the search for the unknown and will work much towards those areas.

Kumbha/Aquarius:
Aquarius connotes unknown treasures. It also means desires getting fulfilled being the natural 11th house of the zodiac. Aquarius also denotes a somewhat detached avatar. Eg for a Taurus Lagna, Aquarius happens to be the 10th house. Whenever these natives do their profession properly, they will be able to obtain the required desires and get more than what they wish. For a Libra Lagna, they will be able to get maximum benefits from their children but they can be bit disconnected and uninvolved in their attitude.

Meena/Pisces:
Whichever house comes as Pisces, losses tends to take place and expenditures gets incurred based on the house significations. But however good things also tend to happen and important information gets divulged based on the house. Eg for Virgo Lagna, Pisces happens to be the 7th bhava denoting spouse, business partners etc. These natives get lot of information on travel, business dealings, foreign articles but at the same time expenditure also will come through them. Eg for Cancer Lagna, Pisces happens to be the 9th bhava. These natives get lot of information from father on religious matters, spiritual pursuits but at the same time losses can also occur through this.

Illustration using DNA Astrology
Lets say someone needs to know the planetary connection of their spouse based on Karmic connectivity as per one's birth chart. Since it is pertaining to matters of spouse, we need to study the connectivity relating to 7th house from both Lagna and Moon.

As an example, let's presume that the person is born in the Lagna of Kumbha Rasi placed in the Nakshatra of Satabisha and Moon Nakshatra is placed in Mithuna Rasi in Aarudra. Hence we have:
Lagna Nakshatra : Satabisha
Moon Nakshatra : Aarudra

- Analysis of Spouse Chart from Native based on Lagna Nakshatra and Moon Nakshatra:
Since this matter pertains to marriage, we need to observe the karmic link associated in the 7th sign from both Lagna and Moon Nakshatra. Through this we would be able to decipher the Nakshatras, Planet combination, Sign placement and House relation of the spouse

- Nakshatra Karma Analysis:
We know Lagna Nakshatra of native is Satabisha. Taking straight opposite 180 degrees from Satabisha corresponds to Magha and Poorva Phalguni Nakshatra which in simple terms is to say Satabisha 1 & 2 padas opposite point will be Magha 3 & 4 padas and Satabisha 3 & 4 padas will pinpoint to Poorva Phalguni 1 & 2 padas. If we know the exact pada of the Lagna, we can directly specify but in general it is better to take the whole Nakshatra because due to house cusp, the exact 7th place can end up being placed little ahead or behind.

Similarly exact 180 degrees placement from Aarudra Nakshatra will occur in Dhanus Rasi under the Nakshatras of Moola and Poorva Ashada. Arudra 1 & 2 pada will link to Moola 3 & 4 and Arudra 3 & 4 pada will link to Poorva Ashada 1 & 2.

Hence the 4 Nakshatras obtained are Magha, Poorva Phalguni, Moola and Poorva Ashada. We know that Poorva Phalguni are attracted by Mars Karma, Magha with Moon Karma and Poorva Ashada with Mercury Karma. Hence lets list the karmic Nakshatras associated with these planets
Moon DNA Karma - Magha
Mars DNA Karma - Poorva Phalguni, Moola
Mercury DNA Karma - Poorva Ashada

Now, we can broadly say that the spouse of this person will have Nakshatra association of Moon, Mars and Mercury. Based on this we can delineate the planet, sign and house karma

- Planet Karma Analysis:
We know that Moon is associated with both Venus & Rahu Karma whereas Mars possesses Saturn Karma. Mercury is however not subject to any planetary karma. Lets list the karmic planets associated with these planets
Moon DNA Karma - Rahu, Venus
Mars DNA Karma - Saturn
Mercury DNA Karma - None

- Sign Karma Analysis:
We know Moon is having karmic connection with the signs of Virgo and Libra, Mars with the sign of Aquarius and Mercury with the sign of Cancer. Lets list the karmic signs associated with these planets
Moon DNA Karma - Virgo, Libra
Mars DNA Karma - Aquarius
Mercury DNA Karma - Cancer

- House Karma Analysis:
We know Moon is having karmic connection with the 6th & 7th house, Mars with 11th house and Mercury with 4th house . Lets list the karmic houses associated with these planets
Moon DNA Karma - 6th house, 7th house
Mars DNA Karma - 11th house
Mercury DNA Karma - 4th house

- Placement of Spouse Chart:
Based on the analysis of DNA connectivity of Nakshatra, Planet, Sign and House, let's look at the different placement and combinations that can be witnessed in the spouse chart

- Nakshatra Karma Placement:
We figured that the spouses Nakshatra is connected through Moon, Mars or Mercury DNA Karma. This could mean the spouses Lagna Nakshatra or Lagna Lord Nakshatra or Moon Nakshatra or combination of them will be placed only in the following 11 Nakshatras viz:
- Moon DNA : Bharani, Magha, Jyeshta, Uttara Bhadrapada
- Mars DNA :  Krithika, Poorva Phalguni, Moola, Revathi
- Mercury DNA : Rohini, Uthira Phalguni, Poorva Ashada

- Planet Karma Placement:
We discovered that Moon, Mars and Mercury DNA Karma are linked with the planets Venus, Rahu and Saturn. This could mean either of Saturn, Venus or Rahu can have association with the Lagna or Lagna Adipathi in the spouses chart. Different kind of combinations that can occur are as follows
- Either of Saturn, Venus or Rahu placed in Lagna
- Lagna Lord conjunct along with Saturn, Venus or Rahu
- Lagna Lord could also be placed in the star of either Saturn, Venus or Rahu
- Lagna Lord can form a connection with Saturn, Venus or Rahu through Aspect

- Sign Karma Placement:
We found that the signs linked to Moon, Mars and Mercury happen to be Virgo, Libra, Aquarius and Cancer. This could mean the Lagna of spouse will be in someway linked with Virgo, Libra, Aquarius or Cancer. Different kind of combinations that can occur are as follows:
- Ascendant will be either of Virgo, Libra, Aquarius or Cancer
- Ascendant Lord could be placed in either of Virgo, Libra, Aquarius or Cancer
- Lord of Virgo, Libra, Aquarius or Cancer can be connected with Lagna or Lagna Lord in someway pertaining to placement, aspect, conjunction

- House Karma Placement:
We found that the houses linked to Moon, Mars and Mercury happen to be 6th, 7th, 11th and 4th house. This could mean the Ascendant of spouse will be in someway linked to the houses of 6th, 7th, 11th and 4th. Different kind of combinations that can occur are as follows:
- Ascendant Lord will be placed in 6th, 7th, 11th or 4th house
- Lords of 6th, 7th, 11th or 4th house will be placed in the Ascendant
- Lords of 6th, 7th, 11th or 4th house can be connected with Lagna or Lagna Lord in someway pertaining to placement, aspect, conjunction

Note:
Like the example of spouse above, on similar lines the planetary combinations of other relatives also can be figured out through DNA such as studying the 4th for mother and deriving on the combination of Nakshatras, Planets, Signs and Houses. Likewise 9th for Father, 5th for 1st child etc. Even on one's profession seeing which planets have strong DNA connectivity to the bhava of profession can signify taking something along those lines. As an illustration to see if someone can be strongly in a Moon based profession such as Catering, Milk etc clues can be got if 10th house is strongly influenced by Venus or Rahu as they showcase the Karma of Moon. Likewise 10th Lord being placed in the Nakshatras of Bharani, Magha, Jyeshta, Uthara Bhadrapada is also an indication. Similarly 10th Lord being associated with 6th and 7th houses or with the signs of Virgo & Libra can also connote a profession with a strong Moon connection.

Criticism
The first obvious limitation of this concept of DNA Astrology is that it is not based on prediction. Astrology itself branches out as a predictive study and to be slotted under the name of astrology and not providing for predictions is a question to ponder over though it clearly maintains its stance as more of a guiding tool. Secondly there is no sage backing or any scriptures which talk about this karma infused concept of astrology. In fact there is no book or even an article written anywhere on the genesis of DNA Astrology. All we have right now are various videos on youtube but it is uncluttered and there is no streamlined method of learning this subject. Thirdly a few concepts are a bit questionable, the one who has made this concept famous stresses on the fact that for all male births the D9 Lagna should fall in odd sign and female births should be in even signs. Now with billions of birth every other day, expecting that males and females will be uniformly born 12-13 minutes apart seems a little too far stretched. In fact this concept is adopted by quite a few astrologers but there is no real logic if you think of it practically. Also the stars as per DNA Karma are assigned to planets which is different from the star lord concept and this secret is believed to have been provided by one enlightened soul. However there is no way to verify the same. Even the birth star concept differs across different texts. For instance 'Vichitra Jothidam' may state that Jupiter was born in Pushya but Brahmanda Purana actually states it being born in Poorva Phalguni. There are few other differences also when it comes to birth stars of other planets. This can cause a huge shift to the system because the framework of the concept depends a lot on the birth star through which Karma planet is derived. Even in Moola Trikona concept, there are differences of opinion. In DNA Astrology, it is opined that Rahu and Ketu have their Moola Trikona sign in Virgo and Pisces respectively but the sacred Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra hints at Gemini and Sagittarius being the Moola Trikona signs of Rahu and Ketu respectively. Additionally Ketu not being provided DNA Karma link from the stars is again a point to consider. Also Venus & Mercury don't have a Karma link associated with other planets and just based on a factor like observation they have been slotted to provide karma to the 3rd and 4th houses respectively. Jupiter on the other hand is having the karmic connectivity of 3 planets viz Sun, Moon and Mars. The problem with all this is there is no solid proof. However there is no denying that the system is evolving and more people are inclined to have their charts checked through the mechanism of DNA Astrology to know about the strengths and potential based on horoscopic positions. However some of the apparent limitations should also be kept in mind. This is not a criticism but just a highlight of where there can be some issues prevailing in the underlying system of DNA Astrology.

Conclusion
DNA Astrology is a guidance based astrology system. It more or less lays a path by studying various patterns in our chart based on our past birth and corresponding events related to the same. As per this scheme, there is a connection behind every birth as a hereditary relationship and a basis behind why an individual is born to a particular set of parents and it is all linked through planetary correlation. It however does not provide any solution or future prediction. It can basically be seen as a prognosis through which we can understand ourselves and acting as a guide in providing a direction as per what is inferred from the horoscope. Edhiridai Nakshatra - Planets causing Obstruction

There is an interesting and rare concept called 'Edhiridai' Nakshatra within the parlance of Vedic Astrology. 'Edhiridai' can be translated as opposite/coming in the way/obstruction. One may have heard of 'Stambhana' or 'Vara Chakra' where a planet is said to freeze another planet. For eg. Venus is said to freeze Sun based on the weekday order. Similarly there is also a concept of Vedhaka where one planet is said to obstruct another planet and it's all the more strong when placed in a particular house from the planet concerned. For instance Venus is said to cause Vedhaka or obstruction to Sun and more so when it is said to be placed in the 11th from the Sun.

Planetary obstruction is quite common but Nakshatra obstruction is an unusual method of analysis where each planet when seated in a Nakshatra, if another planet is seated in a particular Nakshatra from the said planet then it is said to cause an impediment. Let's look at the Planets and list of Nakshatra causing hurdles to understand this concept better.

Sun - Nakshatras 5,7,8,10,12,14,15,18,21,22,23,27 - Total Count 12
Moon - Nakshatras 3,5,7,8,12,18,24 - Total Count 7
Mars - Nakshatras 3,7,10,15,21 - Total Count 5
Mercury - Nakshatras 5,11,21,22 - Total Count 4
Jupiter - Nakshatras 6,7,9 - Total Count 3
Venus - Nakshatras 20,22,24 - Total Count 3
Saturn - Nakshatras 5,6,8,10,11,20,26 - Total Count 7
Rahu - Nakshatras 20,22 - Total Count 2
Ketu - Nakshatras 20,22 - Total Count 2

Illustrating to get a grip on the understanding behind this concept. For instance let's say Sun is placed in the Nakshatra of Vishakha. If any other planet is placed in Nakshatras 5,7,8,10,12,14,15,18,21,22,23,27 from Vishakha, then that planet will cause bottleneck to the Sun. For eg. if Jupiter is placed in Revathi, it happens to be the 12th Nakshatra from Vishakha and hence becomes an obstruction to the Sun. Similarly if Saturn is placed in Shravana which is the 7th Nakshatra from Vishakha then it causes trouble to the Sun. To explain the concept for another planet Venus, if any planet placed in Nakshatras 20,22,24 from the Nakshatra in which Venus is placed, then those planets cause a barrier to Venus. It is important to note that the Nakshatra count is based on the Nakshatra in which a particular planet is placed from the listed planet's Nakshatra and not the regular order such as 1 is for Ashwini, 2 for Bharani, 27 for Revathi etc.

Let's now understand how to use this analysis in a horoscope. This works both from the stand point of Natal horoscope and also on transits/dasas. It also applies both from a Karaka Graha stand point as well as from a Bhava Adipathi view. For eg. lets say for a Gemini Lagna, 10th house Lord is Jupiter and if there is a planet in a Nakshatra placed in Edhiridai to Jupiter ie the 6th, 7th, 9th Nakshatra from where Jupiter is placed in a horoscope it can hamper work prospects for the native. This may hold good in transit as well especially when a functional malefic planet transits the 6th, 7th, 9th Nakshatra from Jupiter's placement, it can cause problems in work environment. Similarly in Dasa Analysis, if the Antar Dasa planet happens to be in Edhiridai to the Maha Dasa planet, it can cause some inconvenience. As another example we know the Karaka for mind is Moon. If any planet is placed in Nakshatras 3,5,7,8,12,18,24 from where Moon is placed, it can cause tension to the mind. Please note this is not to be confused with Tara Bala where generally Nakshatras like 8th, 24th etc are said to be favorable on account of being Mitra, Sadhak Tara respectively.

Also to be noted is that important house lords when obstructed, they get impacted more as opposed to house lords lording negative houses. For instance if the 7th Lord planet is placed in a Nakshatra that obstructs the Lagna Lord, then it can be construed that there can be problems in marital relationship as the 7th Lord of spouse opposes the Native (Lagna Lord). However if the Lagna Lord obstructs the 7th Lord then we can say that the Native is not having interest in marriage related matters. However if a planet is lording the 6th house say, it may not be such a bad thing if opposed as majority of 6th house significations already ends up becoming negative. One more thing of interest is that Sun is the most impacted planet having 12 Nakshatras as Edhiridai, incidentally even in Tithi Shoonya concept Sun owned rasi Leo or Simha is the one bearing the brunt on 5 occasions for Tithi Shoonya.

This in brief is about the concept of Edhiridai Nakshatra. If a planet is placed in specific Nakshatras from where another planet is placed, it will cause obstruction. For eg. say Mercury is placed in Arudra, the 5th star from it is Magha and if there is another planet placed in this Nakshatra will cause trouble to Mercury. Ideally, no planet should be placed in the respective star positions from the specific planet mentioned. For eg if Jupiter is placed in Ashwini, no planet should fall in the 6th, 7th or 9th star from it which is Arudra, Punarvasu & Ashlesha. This technique can be pretty helpful when scrutinizing different facets in horoscope analysis.

Hitherto Unusual Transit Methods in Horoscope Evaluation - Murthy Nirnaya and Shani Vahana

Whenever a yearly transiting planet such as Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu is transiting from one sign to another, there is usually plenty of curiosity associated as to how it will play up for each Moon or Ascendant sign. While transits are not the be all and end all in evaluating a horoscope, it somehow inkles a dose of expectation that some turnaround is bound to take place.

Jupiter's rounds of movement from one sign to another invokes hope that something auspicious will take place especially when it ends up going 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th from Moon sign granting it the 'Guru Bala' title. Saturn's transits are usually perceived with a sense of fear especially when it tends to be Sade Sati which is 12th, 1st and 2nd from Moon sign and also Ashtama Shani which is 8th from Moon is usually dreaded. Rahu/Ketu's movement is looked at as stumbling blocks but in general it is preferred when it is transiting in to the Upachaya houses viz 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th.

However apart from the well established means of witnessing transits, there are also other methods which are a tad different from usual. On that basis would like to highlight emphasis on the scope of Murthy Nirnaya transit as well as Shani Vahana transit. These two are not necessarily based on the sign the yearly planet is moving from the Lagna / Moon but in essence based on a particular energy which works more like a Prasna indicating what to look forward to from the perspective of these transits.

Murthy Nirnaya Transit:
This is a transit which works according to your natal Janma Rasi (Moon sign). This is common for all transits but the catch as per this method is it works based on where transiting Moon is stationed exactly at the time during the transit of the yearly planet. The computation works from Natal Moon to Transiting Moon with the anchor being the yearly transit planet and accordingly results are derived.

For the sake of easy understanding, let us take an illustration. Lets say Jupiter is transiting to Sagittarius on a particular date and time. During the time of Jupiter's transit we need to check where Moon is placed and let us say Moon is placed in Libra when Jupiter moved into Sagittarius. Now we need to compare the house Libra is placed from natal Moon position. If Natal Moon is in Aries, then we can say it is 7 signs since Aries to Libra equated to 7 signs. Now based on the signs moved, there is a bracketing of auspiciousness into 4 compartments as seen below:

1,6,11 - Very Good - Swarna (Gold)
2,5,9 - Good - Rajata (Silver)
3,7,10 - Average - Tamara (Copper)
4,8,12 - Bad - Lohita (Iron)

Based on the above example, for an Aries Moon born person, since 7 is Tamara (Copper), this transit would said to be average. The interesting feature is there is no relevance to the sign in which the main planet transit is happening which would be Jupiter and Sagittarius as seen from above case. Only the natal Moon and the placement of Moon at the time of the big ticket transit is considered which makes this method pretty unique. However the liability with this method happens to be on account of different Ayanamsa and Panchanga followed. As per one scheme of Panchanga, the planet Jupiter (say) may be transiting on a particular date whereas in another view it might be on a different date and we know Moon is ever revolving moving signs every 2 and quarter days. This can cast some issues with regard to the auspiciousness of the transit which can be an issue when using Murthi Nirnaya Transit.

Shani Vahana Transit:
This is a methodology of ascertaining transits exclusively for Saturn when it moves to a new sign or Nakshatra. Saturn is assigned a vehicle based on it's transit and accordingly results are ascertained. As per this method we need to know the Nakshatra in operation when Shani Dev changes signs in addition to our birth Moon Nakshatra.

For instance lets say Saturn is transiting to Capricorn into the Nakshatra of Uttara Ashada. Also lets say natal Moon Nakshatra of a person is Poorva Phalguni. In this case we need to add 21 (number sequence of Uttara Ashada) and 11 (number sequence of Poorva Phalguni). The number sequence is the Nakshatras counted from Ashwini which is taken as #1 to Revathi which is #27. The total of 21 and 11 adds to 32. Now 32 needs to be divided by 9 which yields a reminder of 5. The reminder will decide the vehicle. In case it's perfectly divisible with no reminder then No.9 from the list needs to be taken. Listed below is the Numbers, Vehicles in the form of Animals and the Auspiciousness.

#1 - Donkey - Not favorable
#2 - Horse - Very favorable
#3 - Elephant - Not favorable
#4 - Buffalo - Mixed
#5 - Lion - Favorable
#6 - Jackal - Very Unfavorable
#7 - Crow - Not favorable
#8 - Peacock - Very favorable
#9 - Swan -  Very favorable

In general Swan vehicle is said to be most auspicious and Jackal vehicle is said to be most inopportune. Peacock is also said to be really favorable and Horse is considered highly auspicious. On the flip side, Crow is said to infuse plenty of tensions whereas Elephant is mentioned to give results against expectations and Donkey is indicative of lack of auspiciousness. A lion is considered good especially acting as a trigger in defeating enemies whereas Buffalo's results are said to be mixed and dependent on the work put in. Based on the above example, #5 happens to be Lion vehicle which is favorable. In this method, we can even view based on the Nakshatra within the sign Saturn is transiting and not just the zodiac sign. To explain, for a particular Natal Moon Nakshatra say Punarvasu, Saturn transiting into Uttara Ashada in Makara isn't good since 7+21 = 28 which means reminder 1 translating to Donkey that is unfavorable. However when Saturn moves into Shravana it would be better since 7+22 = 29 amounting to reminder 2 reflecting Horse which indicates very favorable. Hence this comes handy when ascertaining transits especially when Saturn transits each Nakshatra of the zodiac to understand how Saturn will pan out for each natal Moon Nakshatra.

Functional Benefics and Malefics for Every Ascendant

Ascertaining which planets play the role of functional benefics and malefics for every Ascendant can sometimes be a tricky task as many a time you would figure that they happen to lord 2 houses of which one is favorable and the other not so. Also we need to consider several other factors to estimate as per the rule book before laying out a crystallized version of the planets that endow the best and worst results for each of the Lagnas. However looking at the whole picture holistically in the form of a melisma will help in classifying the results in a more refined manner.

Grouping of House Lords:
The best way to start to start this exercise would be to classify the houses into 4 groups as the planets lording a particular house has a major say in the deliverance of results. Hence let's look at the broad grouping of house rulers.
Group 1 : 1,5,9 - Trikona Lords are considered to be beneficial
Group 2 : 1,4,7,10 - Kendra Lords are considered neutral and subject to certain conditions
Group 3 : 12,2,8 - Association Lords are considered to act according to conditions
Group 4 : 3,6,11 - Trishadaya Lords are considered to be malefic

From the above list of 4 groups, on a very broad perspective we can say that planets being the lords of first 2 groups are beneficial and planets lording Groups 3&4 are maleficent. Hence house owners of 1,4,5,7,9,10 are in general considered to be good and lords of 2,3,6,8,11,12 are said to be bad. Also to note is that the order of beneficence or maleficence is based on increasing order. For instance considering the Trikona Lords, 9th is more auspicious than 5th which in turn is more beneficial than the Ascendant Lord. Likewise for the Kendras 10>7>4>1 in providing results. Same way in the association lord category 12th is less malefic to 2nd who again is less harmful than 8th which is most malefic and lastly in the Trishadaya group the 3rd is a lessor malefic compared to 6th who again is less detrimental than 11th who is said to be the most malefic of them all. We have to also keep in mind that 9th and 10th are most benefic in Group 1 and 2 respectively whereas 8th and 11th are most malefic in Group 3 and 4 respectively. Also we find that the Lagna alone is repeated both in Group 1 and 2 which is on account of being both a Trikona as well as Kendra Lord. However it should be taken into account that the Lagna Lord is always generally considered to be favorable.

Planetary Relationship:
After classifying the house lords into different groups, it's salient to also understand the planetary relationship existing between the 7 planets. We need to consider the permanent friendship and we can ignore Rahu/Ketu as they don't own any of the signs independently and only considered as co-owners. This planetary friendship is also crucial in determining the role of functional benefics and malefics. Attached below is the table of permanent friendship among the planets.

Natural Benefics and Natural Malefics:
Apart from classifying the lordship of houses into different groups and knowing about the permanent nature of relationship between planets, it's also essential to know which planets are considered to be natural benefics and malefics. This is especially important to adumbrate results further such as with regards to Kendradhipathi Dosh etc. Hence let's take a list of the natural benefics and malefics.
Natural Benefics:
Venus
Jupiter
Well Associated Mercury
Waxing Moon

Natural Malefics:
Mars
Saturn
Sun
Waning Moon
Ill Associated Mercury

We find Mercury and Moon coming in both these lists and hence warrants a need to understand the same. Mercury is said to be a benefic when associated with a natural benefic and a malefic when associated with a natural malefic. Here for the purpose of natural malefic we need to consider Rahu and Ketu also. For association we need to factor a degree span of 12° which is the key for any yoga formation. If Mercury is alone and not associated with any planet also it is to be treated as a natural benefic. With regard to Moon, the classification is more simple. If it's a waxing Moon or Shukla Paksha it is to be treated as a natural benefic whereas if it is in waning state or Krishna Paksha, it's to be considered as a natural malefic. This list is important when deducing Kendradhipathi because it's said that Natural Benefics lose their potency if they happen to be owners of a kendra.

Other Points of Consideration:
1) In Many cases planets tend to own 2 houses and in such a case the Mool Trikona placement is considered paramount and has a higher say than the other house it owns. Hence for Mars - Aries is more important than Scorpio, Venus - Libra holds a higher say than Taurus, Mercury - Virgo sign plays more crucial role than Gemini, Jupiter - Sagittarius is considered fort over Pisces and for Saturn - Aquarius is given higher priority than Capricorn.
2) When 2 planets own a good lordship and an evil lordship, the good ownership can stall the ill effects of the other planet. Here good means only under Group 1 and specifically only 5th and 9th lord as they are the only kona Lords. Lagna Lord can be factored based on which house it rules also being a Kendra Lord.
3) The 8th lord ownership of Sun and Moon is not considered to be evil. This is possible only for Capricorn Ascendant where Sun is 8th lord and Sagittarius Ascendant where Moon is 8th lord. But however if the lord of 8th simultaneously owns kama trikona lordship namely 3rd, 7th and 11th then it becomes very inauspicious.
4) Maraka houses which is the 2nd and 7th also need to be considered into the equation. A planet simultaneously holding ownership to both these houses can be troublesome and it happens especially for Movable sign Ascendants. Even in cases where only 7th ownership is held and which happens to be lorded by Natural Benefic, it also additionally attracts blemish of Kendradhipathi.
5) Rahu and Ketu are not considered in the study of Functional Benefics and Malefics. They are more influenced by their placement in the horoscope along with association and despositors.

Functional Benefics and Functional Malefics:

➜ Aries Ascendant - Ruler Mars
Functional Benefics: Mars, Jupiter, Sun
Functional Malefics: Mercury, Saturn, Venus
Functional Neutrals: Moon
Mars - Ruler of 1 and 8: Here 1 comes under both Trikona (Group 1) and Kendra (Group 2) Lord whereas 8th happens to be Associated (Group 3) Lord. Being a Trikona it's auspicious and as a natural malefic being Kendra Lord it becomes strong. The 8th lordship being Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is both a trikona and kendra as already seen and in good dignity. Also to note is that 1st house ownership happens to be the Mooltrikona sign. Hence Mars can be considered to be a functional benefic.
Venus - Ruler of 2 and 7: Here Venus rules an Association (Group 3) and a Kendra (Group 2) house. The 2nd lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a kendra that happens to be neutral. On account of being a natural benefic lording a kendra, Venus suffers from the blemish of Kendradhipathi. Venus treats the Lagna Lord as it's neutral. However in this scenario since both 2nd and 7th happen to be Maraka house, Venus is to be considered as a functional malefic.
Mercury - Ruler of 3 and 6: Both comes under Trishadaya (Group 4) Lordship. Mercury treats Lagna Lord as it's neutral but however on account of owning 2 dire malefic houses, Mercury becomes a first rate malefic.
Moon - Ruler of 4: Here Moon comes as a Kendra (Group 2) Lord and Kendradhipathi needs to be evaluated. Moon being a Natural Malefic is better off compared to being a Natural Benefic as blemish of Kendradhipathi will be evaded. Moon happens to be friend to the Lagna Lord but however since no Trine lordship is governed, it can at best be considered a Functional Neutral
Sun - Ruler of 5: Here Sun happens to be a Trikona (Group 1) Lord and hence happens to be extremely auspicious. Sun also happens to be friend of Lagna Lord and hence Sun is considered to be a Functional Benefic
Jupiter - Ruler of 9 and 12: Jupiter rules a Trikona (Group 1) and an Associated (Group 2) house.  Since Jupiter holds auspicious trine lordship of 9th house which is also its Mooltrikona house it is very beneficial. Being an associated lord, we need to check other ownership which is trine rulership that again makes it favorable. Jupiter also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Jupiter can be considered to be a Functional Benefic.
Saturn - Ruler of 10 and 11: Here Saturn rules a Kendra (Group 2) and a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. Being a natural malefic owning highest 10th house kendra makes it strong. However ownership of highest 11th house Trishadya makes it highly malefic. Saturn also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy. On account of not ruling a trine and at the same time owning most malefic 11th house makes Saturn a functional malefic.

➜ Taurus Ascendant - Ruler Venus
Functional Benefics: Saturn, Mercury
Functional Malefics: Jupiter, Moon, Venus
Functional Neutrals: Sun, Mars
Venus - Ruler of 1 and 6: Here 1 comes under both Trikona (Group 1) and Kendra (Group 2) Lord. 6th happens to be a Trishadaya (Group 4). Being a Trikona it's auspicious but as a natural benefic owning a Kendra it loses strength and suffers from the blemish of Kendradhipathi. In addition it also owns a malefic Trishadaya house which also becomes the Mool Trikona house. Even though it's the owner of Ascendant, considering the factors Venus is to be considered a functional malefic.
Mercury - Ruler of 2 and 5: Here Mercury rules an Associated (Group 3) house in addition to  a Trikona (Group 1) house. The 2nd lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a trikona that happens to be beneficial. As Lord of 5th house which also happens to be Mooltrikona it is really favorable. Mercury also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Mercury can be considered to be a functional benefic.
Moon - Ruler of 3: Here Moon stakes ownership to a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. Moon treats Lagna Lord as it's neutral but however on owning a malefic house, it becomes a functional malefic.
Sun - Ruler of 4: Here Sun happens to own a Kendra (Group 2) house. It should be noted that Sun being one of the luminaries can own only one house and being a natural malefic is strong in Kendra owning also the sign of it's Mooltrikona. Sun considers the Lagna Lord to be it's enemy. However being strong Kendra Lord, Sun is to considered as a functional neutral.
Mars - Ruler of 7 and 12: Here Mars rules a Kendra (Group 2) and an Association (Group 3) house. As a natural malefic being Kendra Lord it becomes strong. The 12th lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a kendra which is neutral and in good dignity. Mars also treats Lagna Lord as it's neutral. Hence Mars can be said to be a functional neutral
Jupiter - Ruler of 8 and 11: Here Jupiter rules an Association (Group 3) and a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. The 8th lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a Trishadaya which makes it significantly harmful. Ownership of highest 11th house Trishadya makes it highly malefic. In addition Jupiter also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy. Hence Jupiter is said to be a functional malefic.
Saturn - Ruler of 9 and 10: Here Saturn rules a Trikona (Group 1) and a Kendra (Group 2) house. Being owner of highest 9th house trine it is highly beneficial and being natural malefic owning highest 10th house kendra makes it very strong. This is a combination of Raja Yogakaraka. Saturn also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Saturn is to be considered a functional benefic.

➜ Gemini Ascendant - Ruler Mercury
Functional Benefics: Venus, Saturn
Functional Malefics: Mars, Jupiter, Sun
Functional Neutrals: Mercury, Moon
Mercury - Ruler of 1 and 4: Here 1 comes under both Trikona (Group 1) and Kendra (Group 2) whereas 4th happens to be Kendra (Group 2) Lord. Being Trikona Lord Mercury will be auspicious but however Mercury being ill associated will not suffer from Kendradhipathi Dosh and in fact is better than a well associated Mercury. However being the owner of Ascendant and not ruling any house under Group 3 or 4, Mercury can be said to be a functional neutral.
Moon - Ruler of 2: Here Moon being owner of an Associated (Group 3) House, we need to see the other house it rules which isn't applicable since Moon rules only one house. Moon treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Moon can be considered to be a functional neutral.
Sun - Ruler of 3: Here Sun is ruler of a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. Though Sun treats Lagna Lord as it's neutral but on account of owning an evil house, Sun has to be considered a functional malefic.
Venus - Ruler of 5 and 12: Venus rules a Trikona (Group 1) and an Associated (Group 2) house.  Since Venus holds auspicious trine lordship of 5th house which is also its Mooltrikona sign it is very beneficial. Being an associated lord, we need to check other ownership which is trine rulership that again makes it favorable. Venus also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Venus can be considered to be a Functional Benefic.
Mars - Ruler of 6 and 11: Here Mars owns 2 evil Trishadaya (Group 4) houses. Mars also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy and coupled with owning 2 dire malefic houses, Mars becomes a prime functional malefic
Jupiter - Ruler of 7 and 10: Here Jupiter owns 2 kendra (Group 2). But considering the fact that Jupiter treats Lagna Lord as enemy and also suffers kendradhipathi dosh for both it's ownership, Jupiter is to be considered a functional malefic.
Saturn - Ruler of 8 and 9: Here Saturn rules an Associated (Group 3) house in addition to a Trikona (Group 1) house. The 8th lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a trikona that happens to be beneficial. As Lord of 9th house which also happens to be in Mooltrikona sign it is really favorable. Saturn also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Saturn can be considered to be a functional benefic.

➜ Cancer Ascendant - Ruler Moon
Functional Benefics: Mars, Moon, Jupiter
Functional Malefics: Mercury, Venus
Functional Neutrals: Sun, Saturn
Moon - Ruler of 1: Lagna Lord Moon happens to be both a Trikona (Group 1) and Kendra (Group 2). Moon doesn't own any other house. Being Trikona Lord Moon will be auspicious. It would be favorable if Moon doesn't suffer blemish of Kendradhipathi Dosh being Kendra Lord. However all things considered, being the owner of Ascendant it can said to be a functional benefic.
Sun - Ruler of 2: Here Sun being owner of an Associated (Group 3) House, we need to see the other house it rules which isn't applicable since Sun rules only one house. Sun treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Sun can be considered to be a functional neutral.
Mercury - Ruler of 3 and 12: Mercury owns a Trishadaya (Group 4) in addition to an Association (Group 3) house. Being owner of Trishadaya it becomes a malefic. Being an associated lord, we need to check other ownership which is Trishadaya which makes it significantly harmful. Mercury also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy. Hence Mercury is a functional malefic.
Venus - Ruler of 4 and 11: Here Venus rules a Kendra (Group 2) and a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. Being a Kendra Lord, Venus suffers blemish of Kendradhipathi Dosh. As a lord of Trishadaya it becomes malefic by default. In addition Venus also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy. Hence Venus is a prime functional malefic.
Mars - Ruler of 5 and 10: Here Mars rules a Trikona (Group 1) and a Kendra (Group 2) house. Being owner of 5th house trine it is highly beneficial and being natural malefic owning highest 10th house kendra makes it very strong. This is a combination of Raja Yogakaraka. Mars also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Mars is to be considered a functional benefic.
Jupiter - Ruler of 6 and 9: Here Jupiter rules a Trishadaya (Group 4) as well as a Trikona (Group 1) house. Being owner of a Trishadaya which also happens to be the Mooltrikona sign, it happens to be malefic. However Jupiter also rules a trine conferring it to be favorable. Jupiter also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend getting exalted in its sign. We have to consider the fact that when a planet rules a trine, it is advantageous even if it also simultaneously happens to lord an evil house. Hence Jupiter is a functional benefic.
Saturn - Ruler of 7 and 8: Here Saturn rules a Kendra (Group 2) and an Association (Group 3) house. As a natural malefic being Kendra Lord it becomes strong. The 8th lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a kendra which happens to be neutral and in good dignity. Saturn also treats Lagna Lord as it's enemy. However since no Group 4 house ownership is involved, Saturn can be said to be a functional neutral.

➜ Leo Ascendant - Ruler Sun
Functional Benefics: Mars, Sun, Jupiter
Functional Malefics: Mercury, Venus, Saturn
Functional Neutrals: Moon
Sun - Ruler of 1: Lagna Lord Sun happens to be both a Trikona (Group 1) and Kendra (Group 2) . Sun doesn't own any other house. Being Trikona Lord Sun will be auspicious and as a natural malefic owning kendra it becomes strong. Hence Sun can be considered to be a functional benefic
Mercury - Ruler of 2 and 11: Here Mercury rules an Association (Group 3) and a Trishadaya (Group 4) house. The 2nd lord being an Associated Lord, we need to see the other house it rules which is a Trishadaya which makes it significantly harmful. Ownership of highest 11th house Trishadya makes it highly malefic. Mercury however treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. But on account of owning a Trishadaya house with no trine influence Mercury is said to be a functional malefic.
Venus - Ruler of 3 and 10: Venus rules a Trishadaya (Group 4) and a Kendra (Group 2) house. Ownership of 3rd house makes it malefic. On account of being a natural benefic lording a kendra, Venus suffers blemish of Kendradhipathi. Venus also treats the Lagna Lord as it's enemy. Hence Venus is a functional malefic.
Mars - Ruler of 4 and 9: Mars owns both a Kendra (Group 2) and Trikona (Group 1) house. As a natural malefic being kendra Lord it becomes strong and being a trikona it is highly auspicious. This is a combination of Raja Yogakaraka. Mars also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Mars is to be considered a functional benefic.
Jupiter - Ruler of 5 and 8: Jupiter rules a Trikona (Group 1) and an Associated (Group 2) house.  Since Jupiter holds auspicious trine lordship of 5th house which is also its Mooltrikona house it is very beneficial. Being an associated lord, we need to check other ownership which is trine rulership that again makes it favorable. Jupiter also treats Lagna Lord as it's friend. Hence Jupiter is to be considered a Functional Benefic.

A Trikona Lordship (1,5,9) is always beneficial but it applies unanimously only to 5,9 ownership. Lagna (1st Lord) also happens to be a Kendra and hence it needs to be evaluated from that angle also.

 Special Demarcation to 10th
A) Dual Signs:
The 10th house in many cases happens to be a Yoga conferring house. Considering the Dual Ascendants for Virgo and Pisces the Lagna Lords Mercury and Jupiter happen to be Functional Benefics whereas for Gemini and Sagittarius the Lagna Lords Mercury and Jupiter only happen to be Functional Neutrals. Lagna ownership is common for all these Ascendants and each of these ascendants is susceptible to the blemish of Kendradhipathi Dosh but however Virgo & Pisces holding 10th ownership is given superior weight over Gemini & Sagittarius controlling 4th ownership.
B) Sun for Scorpio:
For Scorpio Ascendant, Sun only rules the 10th house and there is no trinal influence. But despite that it is given the status of functional benefic as it's expected to combined with the Moon who is the 9th lord conferring a Rajayoga.

➤ Impact of Kendradhipathi
A) 2nd & 7th Lords - Aries & Libra Ascendants:
For Aries, Venus rules the 2nd and 7th house whereas for Libra, Mars rules the 2nd and 7th houses. For Aries, Venus is considered as a functional malefic whereas for Libra Mars is a functional neutral. This is because for Aries, Venus being 7th Lord is exposed to the blemish of Kendradhipathi which also happens to be in it's Mooltrikona sign. This makes Venus a functional malefic for Aries. However for Libra, Mars being 7th Lord does not have the impact of Kendradhipathi. In fact, the Kendra house of Aries being also the Mooltrikona sign of Mars, it's ownership only enhances the house. Hence Mars is classified as a Functional Neutral for Libra.

B) 7th & 12th Lords - Taurus & Scorpio Ascendants:
For Taurus, Mars rules the 7th and 12th house whereas for Scorpio, Venus rules the 7th and 12th house. For Taurus Mars is  considered as a a functional neutral whereas for Scorpio Venus is a functional malefic. This is because in Taurus Ascendant, Mars rules the 7th house of Scorpio and does not have the impact of Kendradhipathi. This makes Mars a functional neutral. However for Scorpio Ascendant, Venus being the 7th Lord of Taurus is exposed to the blemish of Kendradhipathi and hence Venus is classified as a Functional Malefic for Scorpio.

6th supersedes 8th in malefic ownership - Mars & Venus Ascendants
A) Aries & Scorpio:
For the Mars ruled Ascendants namely Aries and Scorpio, apart from owning Lagna they rule the 8th and 6th respectively. For Aries, Mars is a functional benefic whereas for Scorpio Mars is only a functional neutral. This is mainly due to Aries being the Lagna Lord also happens to be the Mooltrikona sign and also when considering 8th placement being Associated Lord it will look at other house in question which is the 1st that happens to be in good dignity. For Scorpio, the Mooltrikona house becomes evil 6th house owner and increases maleficence.

B) Taurus & Libra:
Extending the principles for the Venus Ascendants namely Taurus and Libra, apart from owning Lagna they also rule the 6th and 8th respectively. For Taurus, Venus is actually a functional malefic whereas for Libra Venus is a functional neutral. This is mainly due to Libra being the Lagna Lord also happens to be the Mooltrikona sign and also when considering 8th placement being Associated Lord it will look at other house in question which is the 1st which is a Trikona and Kendra. Here however unlike Mars for Aries, Venus suffers the blemish of Kendradhipathi and hence relegated to just being a functional neutral. For Taurus however, the Mooltrikona house becomes evil 6th house owner and increases maleficence.. Also as Lagna, since it suffers the blemish of Kendradhipathi, Venus ends up becoming a functional malefic for Taurus Ascendant.

2nd supersedes 12th in malefic ownership - Saturn Ascendants
A) Capricorn & Aquarius
For the Ascendants Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn happens to be Lagna Lord and in addition for Capricorn it also happens to be 2nd lord whereas for Aquarius it is also 12th lord. For Aquarius, Saturn is however considered to be a functional benefic whereas for Capricorn it is a functional malefic. In both cases the other Lord happens to be an Associated Lord and so it must ring a bell regarding the nomenclature of differentiation. The reason is for Aquarius, Lagna lord happens to be in it's Mooltrikona sign and the other lordship is largely dependent on Lagna Lord which is stationed favorably. For Capricorn however the Lagna Lord is not a Mooltrikona sign. Also being a movable sign the 2nd house is susceptible to being a Maraka. Hence this is the reason Saturn is more beneficial to Aquarius as compared to Capricorn.
