Kuyil Paattu - When birds sing, it's Ecstasy

There is something about this song that pierces a deep indentation on to your soul. A few portions of this magical composition actually gives goosebumps in the real sense. I find it very difficult to explain in mere words but the experience simply shakes you into a state of elysium.

This song is as rustic as it gets and Maestro's usage of flute gives it the nativity and folkish tinge so very profound. The real superstar of the song however is the rendition of Swarnalatha who brings in a mixture of both passion & pathos with her soul stirring singing soaked with emotions in abundance.

It sounds like the chirping of birds and rightfully so the lyrics by 'Ponnadiyan' pays tribute to it by evaluating with the beautiful humming sound of the morning birds. The true moment of reckoning however arrives during the Charanam portion with the crooning of "mannavanum pOgum paadhaiyil vaasamulla malligaippoo meththai virippaen". This line appears suddenly out of the blue and parallelly with the violins at the background communicating the desired effect leaves you with a lump in the heart. Totally unexpected and out of the box.

Thought of wanting to try this number Kuyil Paattu from the movie 'En Rasavin Manasile'. An evergreen song for the ages from early 90s predominantly based on raga Shivaranjani known to induce yearning, melancholy and longing. This number perfectly exhibits all these feelings and stands as a great testimony to the handling of the intensity which this raga is exquisitely and explicitly known for.

Jeans - The 7 Wonder Number!

The soundtrack Jeans was a rage back in the day. It was unique, colourful and peppy with the cinematography especially elevating the experience of the music. It was the first movie to have glimpses of all the seven wonders of the world at that point in time. All the numbers had blends of various elements and it was an album with almost every single song ending up being a chartbuster. Even the sonorous love theme was lapped up big time by the music loving public.

This particular song Poovukkul had a lovely laden touch to it soaked with oodles of romance all over. The picturisation is what eventually takes the cake with shots of scenes canned at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Colosseum, Empire State Building, Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Egyptian pyramids and the Eiffel Tower. And then finally the heroine Aishwarya Rai is depicted as the 8th wonder.

This number was rendered by the duo of Unni Krishnan & Sujatha with both doing an amicable job by acing it and providing the requisite feel good factor. 'Jeans' will always be a special album by A R Rahman for the multitude of genres which he touched in this comic caper of a double edged twin twisted thriller.

Just thought of giving a small stab at this lovey dovey evergreen romantic song from yesteryear set largely in the base of major scale 'Shankarabaranam' and rekindle olden golden memories from the times gone by.

Bowled over by Jab Zid Pe Aa Gayi Parvathi!

Ever since I lent a listen to this number, I've simply been hooked. It has an extremely charming churn sashayed up with a beguiling blend and dolloped up with a gorgeous glide that lures you over and just becomes contagious after a point. After a very long time I've heard something repeatedly on loop.

Also I figured out a completely unrelated but beautiful coincidence brewing at the time of first chancing upon this song. The lyrics penned has a lovely blissful twist as it deals with the resoluteness of the Mountain Goddess Ma Parvathi who despite all the convincing by the Saptharishis refuses to budge towards her unrelenting love towards Bholenath / Lord Shiva.

This whole week beginning has seen a devotional drive with Monday (14th Sep) being Vinayaka Chaturthi - the birthday of the Queen's own son who is so steadfast in his commitment and loyalty towards his mother. Tuesday was Rishi Panchami / Jayanthi (15th Sep) - a day to honour the hallowed Saptharishis who are known for enlightening and guiding the heavenliest of souls with Mother Parvathi herself being a beneficiary of their advice and teachings.

Wednesday (16th Sep) was the legendary singer Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi's (MS) 110th Birthday. Her devotional songs are a reflection of her selfless bhakti towards the divine. As witnessed through her character 'Meerabhai' in the movie Meera where she showcases her undying spirit towards Krishna can be resonated in similar lines with Parvathi's own devotion towards Lord Shiva. Thursday (17th Sep) was the grand Maha Kumbhabhishekham of Madurai Meenakshi Temple after 17 long years. Meenakshi who's also known as 'Angayarkanni' is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi herself and is a personification of beauty showcasing warrior like qualities. Just a mere imminent glance of her fish eyes is said to protect and nurture her devotees.

With so much serendipity at play linked towards the backdrop of this song, I couldn't but help trying and sharing this within my limited abilities on this Friday (18th Sep). Simply for the love of Ma Parvathi and this jewel crested composition set to tune in Bundeli folk tradition from the movie Hanuman Ansh.
