Mudakku or Latta or Sthula - The Stumbling Block in a Horoscope

There are various methods in figuring out problem areas in a horoscope and one supposed technique happens to be 'Mudakku' which occurs exclusively from the position of the Sun in a natal chart. The actual coinage of this concept is actually 'Latta' or 'Sthula' which indicates a thorn or contraction but since the word 'Mudangu' in Tamil gives a more apt meaning to the terminology of blockage or restrain or hindrance, it popularly came to be termed as 'Mudakku'. In Tamil dialect 'Mudakku' is said to indicate "Ool Vinai Karma" which mentions about one's inherited fate. In layman's terms, it is said to imply that whatever house or bhava comes as 'Mudakku' in one's horoscope, that indicates a susceptibility and needs to be remedied and worked upon. It is like saying that if a machine stops working, we would have to repair it and that's how it has to be linked within the parlance of a horoscope.

Mudakku is calculated based on the following procedure. We first need to ascertain the Nakshatra in which Sun is placed in the horoscope. From that Nakshatra we need to count until Moola Nakshatra. The count arrived at should then again be counted from Poorva Ashada (Pooradam) Nakshatra and the resultant Nakshatra happens to be the Mudakku Nakshatra with the house owner said to be causing the Mudakku Dosha. The reason for the counting taking place till Moola is because that's the space which is said to possess the location of the Kundalini viz the Mooladhara. There are certain resultant Nakshatras that fall in two rasis and in such a case we always need to evaluate based on where the initial pada of the Nakshatra falls and that would end up being the Mudakku Bhava.

As an illustration let's say someone has their Sun placed in Chitra Nakshatra. We need to count from Chitra till Moola both inclusive which happens to be 6 in number. Now 6 Nakshatras have to be counted from Poorva Ashada (Pooradam) and that will result in Poorva Bhadrapada (Pooratathi) Nakshatra. Hence the Mudakku Nakshatra happens to be Poorva Bhadrapada and the house causing the Mudakku Dosh will be Kumbha or Aquarius since we have to see where the Nakshatra of Poorva Bhadrapada starts which will always be Kumbha.

As spoken about earlier, the house which comes as 'Mudakku' causes a bottleneck or an obstacle which weighs down heavily relating to the significations of that house. Listed below are some effects based upon the house owner of the Mudakku:

Mars - Difficulty in initiating things. Problem with property related matters.
Venus - Issues in relationships and dealing with people.
Mercury - Documentation problems and troubles arising out of communication. Issues with education.
Moon - Causes mental instability and discomfort. Body and mind not in sync.
Sun - Lack of authority and respect. Governmental matters causes problems.
Jupiter - No support from elders and lack of guidance. Problems in dealing with children.
Saturn - General delay in happening of things. Profession related problems.

Sharing below brief issues depending on the house in which Mudakku occurs:
1st House - Individual finds it hard to get going or go forward with any venture, faces issues with anything that native initiates. These natives find it hard to exhibit their talents and hence makes it difficult for themselves to grow. They tend to get caught in a shell and natives with such a placement are said to be adamant not listening to anyone and taking own decisions only to suffer the consequences

2nd House - Family and money matters tend to backfire. For such a native nobody tends to listen and take them seriously. These people should ideally not give or take any loans as they find it hard to get back or repay funds on time. It is also said that such a native should be careful in driving vehicles as accidents can occur.

3rd House - With such a placement, good deeds seldom takes place. It is not good for any document related work and such natives face issues of cheque bouncing / returning. Also if such a native provides information to anyone, there are chances of landing in problems. Their communication seldom gets misinterpreted and they find it hard to come to the limelight. They also tend to face issues from their younger siblings.

4th House - Mother related significations can take a beating. Additionally mental peace can be disturbed and there can be instability in home environment. They always face property issues. During the process of buying or construction or after that also some or other problem in house environment tends to affect them by default.

5th House - This is said to induce plenty of troubles and is a placement said to cause Putra Dosh. They also face issues with ancestral wealth and fall short of getting blessings of their Kula Deva with regard to any deed. Love matters can also take a hit. These natives never hear any good things and are usually critical of other people.

6th House - These natives are generally under confident having fear and self doubt. They also tend to give benefit to others whether right or wrong. They usually lack the competitive edge. Any service they perform they find it to hard to come out victorious. In day to day jobs, they largely face problems with regard to type of job, sub ordinates etc mostly indicating lack of job satisfaction.

7th House - This placement usually sparks issues with regard to married life and relationships. They are advised to not get into partnership business of any sorts. These natives never get company of the rightful friends and most of their affairs in dealing with people end up being distasteful.

8th House - These natives are always on the search and keep seeking things throughout. They are never self satisfied and keep on looking for newer avenues and tend to trouble themselves a lot by overdoing stuff. They undergo sudden upheavals time and again and embarrassing situations can come upon many a time. As 8th also indicates 'Mangalya Sthana', some or other issue can crop up at time of performing marriage or after that also.

9th House - Auspicious happenings take a beating. It is not good for father related significations as well and these natives are unlucky when it comes to accumulating ancestral blessings. They face issues even in wanting to visit their 'Ishta Devata'. Even when they go abroad from their homeland these natives tend to encounter problems. Maladies are also said to culminate especially with respect to uterus.

10th House - As this is the house of Karma, plenty of karma significations tend to get affected. One will be prohibited from performing his karma. Issues in married life along with more than one marriage is said to be possible along with not having fine relations with children. This house also indicates all to do with respect, honour and achievements and these natives always tend to stumble when it comes to attaining professional growth in career.

11th House -  These natives are said to be highly desirous and always after possessions. They tend to be extremely materialistic and really keen on accumulating money more so others than their own. Gains of any kind are however hard to come by even if they so desire. Their minds tend to oscillate a lot and they never have any mental satisfaction or come to a decision quickly with respect to anything. Issues with elder siblings also keeps persisting.

12th House - These natives usually lack consciousness and are very slow in action taking their own time. They are usually said to incur heavy pains either on the head area or on the legs. Sleep problems are a constant and they are perennially disturbed. These people also find it hard to possess immovable properties. They also end up in losses and incur expenditure in various ways.

This in general is about the concept of Mudakku. It is extremely important to note the house in which the Mudakku is formed in the horoscope along with also knowing the house owner as some inherent significations of the house lord gets affected. The planets sitting in Mudakku Bhava also cause an impact. It is also believed that when the Karma planet Saturn in transit crosses the Mudakku house and especially the Mudakku Nakshatra and it's trine, it is said to induce intense karma dosh. For eg. if the Mudakku Nakshatra happens to be Revathi in Pisces, whenever Saturn crosses Revathi and its trine Nakshatras viz Ashlesha and Jyeshta in Cancer and Scorpio respectively it can cause severe troubles. There is also a way of keeping the Mudakku Bhava as Lagna and seeing where Sun is placed from it along with also seeing its movement from the main Lagna. For instance if Sun is placed 7th from Mudakku and 4th from Lagna, we can interpret by saying that marriage problems can get brewed largely due to lack of sukha or comforts. Poorva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni are the Nakshatras forming and ending the process of Mudakku with both belonging in the rasi of Simha owned by the Sun which is the planet that ends up causing this whole Mudakku Dosh. Aadi Pooram (Poorva Phalguni) and Panguni Uthiram (Uttara Phalguni) are in fact important festivals celebrated in a religious way down South. This in essence is all about the stumbling block originating methodology of Latha or Sthula more popularly now known as 'Mudakku'.

Information and Results pertaining to different Tithis of Panchanga

Tithi - A Limb of Panchanga
A Tithi happens to be one of the core elements of the five limbed Panchanga. A Tithi occurs based on the angular distance that is created between the Sun & Moon as they revolve around the zodiac belt of 360°. Every 12 degrees of movement by the Moon away from the Sun gives rise to a Tithi and hence there are 30 Tithis (360°/12) in total with 15 being part of the brighter half or what is known as Shukla Paksha and the latter 15 being part of the darker half or Krishna Paksha. For counting purposes we normally consider it like there are 15 Tithis in total much like there are 7 Varas, 27 Nakshatras, 27 Yogas and 11 Karanas.

Tithi and Prosperity
It is said that Knowledge of Tithi brings prosperity. There is also the popular saying stating 'Tithiyai Pidicha Vidhiyai Vellalam' which translates as one who catches hold of their Tithi can even conquer their destiny. Hence Tithi has a very important hold with regard to a Horoscope and is much more than just being used for Muhurtha purposes or celebrating the auspicious events of deities such as Krishna Ashtami or Rama Navami etc.

Tithi and Destiny
It is also believed that Tithi is inherently connected to one's past life and the Tithi one is born with is correlated with the paava punyam or merits / sins from previous birth and accordingly the Tithi is the one that determines the destiny for an individual in this lifetime. Each of the Tithis barring the 15th Tithi of Pournima/Ammavasya are impacted by 2 or more Rasis being cursed leaning to the concept of Tithi Shoonya or Daghda Rasi which indicates certain dark spots in a particular area for an individual horoscope. However there is a saying that only one out of two rasis gets the tag of shoonya rasi (except Chaturdashi Tithi where 2 out of 4 get impacted) based on whether birth takes place in brighter half or darker half. The general understanding is that the first rasi becomes shoonya as per Kala Purusha order for a Shukla Paksha birth and the second rasi becomes shoonya as per Kala Purusha order for a Krishna Paksha birth. This holds good in most cases except for Tithis 3,4 and 7. Apart from Tithi Shoonya Rasis, there are also cases of Lagnas (Ascendant), Nakshatras (Asterism) and Masa (Lunar month) which become Shoonya when arising with certain Tithis which are dispensed below. These concepts are largely used for purpose of fixing Muhurthas.

Tithi Deities
Each of the Tithis also happen to be ruled by a particular deity apart from a Devi assigned to each of them yearning towards prosperity. It is believed that offering prayers to the Nitya Devi linked to the Tithi in which one attains birth helps in granting wealth and prosperity. There is also a type of Ganapathi or Lord Ganesh associated with each of the Tithis and worship of the said type of Ganapathi helps in removing obstacles.

Tithi and the Venus Connection
Tithi mainly connotes the Tamil words 'Selvam' and 'Magizhchi' which is all about happiness, pleasures, delights, earning wealth and desiring prosperity. Since all these undertakings generally come within the ambit of Venusian qualities, a Tithi broadly is said to be under the control of the planet Venus and ruled by the water element.

Tithi - Benefic and Malefic
In general parlance as per Sage Parashara, Moon is classified as Natural Benefic or Natural Malefic based on whether it is under waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) or waning phase (Krishna Paksha) respectively. There are some authorities however stating that Moon is beneficial after it crosses a specific Tithi in the second half of the brighter phase and continues to be favorable till around the mid of the darker phase where it again becomes malefic as it reaches towards Ammavasya and even beyond that into the first half of the brighter phase as Moon is still in rather close conjunction with the Sun. However when it comes to auspiciousness of Tithi, it is categorized into Auspicious, Mixed and Inauspicious based on its proximity with the Sun.

Tithi Groupings
Tithis are also categorised into 5 kind of groupings viz Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta and Poorna as per the text 'Kalaprakasika'. The groupings resonate with a particular planet based on the meaning of the terms. This however should not be construed as if the Tithi is lorded by the particular planet but more in line with a group of Tithis relating to the characteristic of a particular planet.

Nanda - 1st, 6th and 11th Tithi. Ruler Venus. Denotes joyousness and happiness
Bhadra - 2nd, 7th and 12th Tithi. Ruler Mercury. Denotes fortune and health
Jaya - 3rd, 8th and 13th Tithi. Ruler Mars. Denotes victory and triumph
Rikta - 4th, 9th and 14th Tithi. Ruler Saturn. Denotes loss and emptiness
Poorna - 5th, 10th and 15th. Ruler Jupiter. Denotes fulfillment and completeness

The Rikta Tithis in general are said to be inauspicious for any important work to be carried out and is best said to be avoided whereas the Poorna Tithis are apt for performing any religious ceremonies. Nanda Tithis invoke sense of pleasure, Bhadra is said to be friendly and Jaya competitive. Hence Tithis for an activity can be used accordingly based on the grouping. It is also said that if a Tithi and it's grouping ruler lord happens to coincide on the particular weekday or Vara, it is said to be auspicious for instance Nanda Tithi & Friday, Bhadra Tithi & Wednesday, Jaya Tithi & Tuesday, Rikta Tithi & Saturday and Poorna Tithi & Thursday.

Tithi Specifics
Kalaprakasika also categorises Tithis based on its orientation with Sunrise as seen below:

Tithi Kshaya - If a Tithi originates after the occurence of Sunrise and finishes before the start of the sunrise in the next day, it is known as Tithi Kshaya. This means that on two consecutive days of sunrise, the Tithi isn't present and denotes a decrease. Such a Tithi is said to be inauspicious and is better if one avoids performing any tasks during such a period of time.

Tithi Adhi or Tithi Vridhi - If a Tithi originates before the occurence of Sunrise and finishes only after the start of the sunrise in the next day, it is known as Tithi Vridhi. Here the Tithi is present on two consecutive days of sunrise and said to connote an increase. This is also not suitable and it is said to avoid any favorable tasks during this period of time.

Tithi Gandanta - The one last Gatika of a Poorna Tithi and the first one Gatika of a Nanda Tithi is said to denote Tithi Gandanta. It is generally better to avoid any activity during this period.

Tithi Lordship
There aren't many texts that talk about the Lordship of each of the Tithis. There is a view of following Tithi Lordship based on the weekday order such as assigning the first Tithi to Sun, second Tithi to Moon and so on till the 7th Tithi to Saturn and then 8th to Rahu and then back again with Sun ruling the 9th Tithi and then the 15th Tithi of bright half provided to Saturn and 15th of darker half given to Rahu. This methodology however does not have any sage backing.

The only Ancient text which makes a reference to Lordship of Tithis happens to be the Kerala treatise on Horary Astrology titled 'Krishneeyam' by Shree Krishna Acharya. This book has clearly delineated the rulership planet for each of the Tithis which are dispensed below. There is no exact methodology of how exactly the Tithi Lord needs to be used in a horoscope but since Tithi in essence is all about significations such as Pleasures, Desires, Relationships, Passion, Happiness, Wealth etc it makes sense to see where the Tithi Lord is placed and the house(s) it owns to approximately come to a judgement on the interest towards these matters. It will also be preferable if the Tithi Lord itself doesn't end up getting placed in a Tithi Shoonya Rasi.

Note: Hindu festivals are largely decoded based on the Tithi in operation. The Christian festivals are more aligned to a specific day or date such as Christman always arising on December 25th, New Year's on Jan 1st etc. Muslim festivals on the other hand are largely based on Moon sighting and not observance of a particular Tithi as most Hindu festivals but they more or less have a correlation as Moon's phases originate as part of Tithi. It would be quite interesting to note that Ramadan always commences around Shukla Paksha Dwitiya Tithi based on the viewing of crescent moon and Eid on Shukla Paksha Dwitiya Tithi in the following lunar month. Muslims are known to fast and offer obeisance to God for Ramadan during the entire month and Eid marks the end of the Islamic holy month fasting of Ramadan. Another of their festival, Bakrid happens around Shukla Paksha Dashami in the lunar month of Ashada.

Information and Results pertaining to different Karanas of Panchanga

A Karana is considered to be half of a Tithi and there are 11 Karanas in totality. A Tithi gets formed every time the Moon moves 12 degrees away from the Sun and half of a Tithi is a Karana which is 6 degrees. Hence there are 60 Karanas in total (360°/6) which are however further categorized into 11 as 7 of the karanas are movable and repeat 8 times in a cycle making up 56 and there are remaining 4 fixed karanas all together making up the sum total of 60.

It is said that Knowledge of Karanas leads to success. There is also a popular saying stating 'Karanam Thappinal Maranam' meaning Karanam is so powerful that it can even save you from the clutches of death. It is also said to be the 'Karya Siddhi' that translates as 'granting of success'. A Karana can indicate means of work getting accomplished and providing a direction towards life by putting in the required efforts. C Salt - Coastal Cuisine by the sea shore!

C Salt is a fine dining restaurant predominantly serving South Indian cuisine and located as part of the sprawling Sheraton Grand resort. You could see patches of greenery all around with the main entrance being constructed under a thatched roof like setting. It gives a laidback atmosphere and the blowing of the breeze from the beach side from just across the corner gives it the much needed tranquil environment. Sunday drives in Chennai to the serene beaches and hogging along some glorious cuisine is surely a great getaway to spend the weekend and C Salt amply caters to that requirement.

The menu is well rounded bringing the curated best of South India from 4 coastal regions covering the belts of Malabar, Konkan, Coromandel and Andhra. These areas are known to dish out supreme stuff making primary use of coconut and the aroma can be inherently felt as you step in. It is largely a limited menu comprising of an interesting array of small plates, a few combo based meals and a few mains to go along with side dishes.

Even before we could set the ball rolling, we were served some crunchy tapioca chips to go along with delightful cilantro and lemon dips. We started our foray with the button cakes which were fluffed up pieces of idly generously topped with abundant pieces of podi masala topped with layers of chilies and curry leaves for that enhanced zing. It was absolutely delicious and dwells up as a superlative cocktail based appetizer. Next up from the starter section we had a droolworthy malai brocolli. These florets were drenched along with the rightful dose of cream to get the ammunition soaring and came along with pink onions and a dollop of soya sauce. The pieces were just about perfect both in texture and taste.

In the main course section, we chose to have a combo meal in the form of a rich creamy gravy comprising of cashew nuts, asparagus and potatoes simmered in a coconut cream avatar coming along with couple of chunks of Aki Roti. It had a wonderful effervescence with the dreamy gravy being suffused with a beautiful blend of coconut cream and going along perfectly well with the rice breads made famous in Karnataka. One minor blip in the gravy was the fact that mix of the ingredients making up the curry seemed a bit one sided. An abundance of cashews made up almost a whole of the mix relegating the potatoes and asparagus to play a distinct second fiddle. Just felt the combination of the three could have been a little more judicious thus avoiding the over powering of cashew nuts in the overall scheme of things. Apart from this we also tried a paratha infused with cheese to go along with a tangy egg gravy mingled with spices aplenty to get a signature taste. The parathas were nice though not dolled up with that much of cheese and also being a little too hard on the surface. The egg curry hit all the right spots on every angle with all the add-ons elevating its taste to another level. Only gripe that was felt was on the quantity which seemed a little less from the bowl being served. We skipped having desserts as there wasn't really more space to take in any further intake.
Overall it was a relaxing meal soaked on a smooth Sunday afternoon setting with the sound of waves providing for some great company to go along with the food that was largely wholesome on substance and flavours. The service was apt and we were helped with some wonderful choices to go with. Time taken for the food seemed a bit on the longer duration but it didn't matter much as we were anyway here to just kill time and enjoy the calmness of this sea side resort. Rates seem fair for the course and definitely in line with what is served at a 5 star property. On the whole, if you're looking for a well deserved yearning weekend afternoon in Chennai wanting some unbridled peace and food to relish, you don't need to look much beyond C Salt which is certain to ensure meeting expectations with aplomb.

Despair to Delirium - When Adversity turned around the corner

Cut to the year 1993. A blonde haired Czech Jana Novotna was playing the match of her life going toe to toe with the mighty German Steffi Graf and on the verge of toppling the then 4 time Wimbledon champion who was looking for her 3rd straight title and 5th conquest in the last 6 years. It seemed just a matter of time as the unheralded Czech had taken an almost unassailable 4-1 lead in the final set with a game point in hand to help her further go up 5-1. But then destiny struck and this young Czech suffered a nervous melt down perhaps like never ever seen before especially at the threshold of greatness and simply disintegrated not being able to handle the enormous pressure in front of a packed Center court audience who were rooting for a new champion to be crowned.

Jana lost her nerves allowing Steffi an array of hope which she pounced immediately by breaking Jana and making the score line 4-2. Novotna still had a break in hand but it was all of no avail as Steffi barraged her way through to win the next 4 games and claim game, set and match for a triple continuous Wimbledon glory. It was heartbreak and absolute despair for the Czech who was on the cusp of a major triumph but alas it was not to be. She just had to retain her poise, composure and play a normal game to close out the match and championship but the euphoric stage of center court got the better of her making her lose the grip allowing Graf to claw back by winning 5 games in a row. It was certainly a case of 'oh so near yet so far' as these opportunities don't come to everyone and one had the feeling this was the last ditch at a Wimbledon title for Jana who wanted it so badly. Though Steffi had won the title with an unprecedented comeback further extending her glorious run of Grand Slam victories, the story which stole the show was Jana bursting on to tears at the presentation ceremony and crying profusely at the Duchess of Kent's shoulders. Everyone was sad for her and there was always a vindictive feeling that this chance may really never occur again for Jana who had stormed her way to the final defeating the invincible Martina Navratilova in the semifinals and was just within a point and a game from usurping Steffi Graf as well.

The next few years after 1993, Jana Novotna was not really able to make a headway in Wimbledon until 1997 when she again managed to reach the finals for the second time. This time her opponent was the precocious16 year old Martina Hingis who had recently become one of the youngest ever to win a Grand Slam by claiming the Aussie Open in the same year at the tender age of 16yrs and 4 months. Martina was already the youngest player ever to win Wimbledon by winning the doubles event in the previous year at just age 15 and was looking to be the youngest ever to win Wimbledon Singles title since the turn of the century. Lottie Dod won at the tender age of 15 going as way back as 1887 during the early stages when Wimbledon began and nobody across the 20th century had come close to conquering at such a young age. Jana had her odds stacked against her and gave the Swiss Miss quite a tiff fight by claiming the first set but eventually it was not to be as Hingis created history by being the youngest in the open era and in the entire 20th century to claim the Venus Rosewater Dish. It was again a bit of a jolt for Jana as she had come so close yet again faltering at the final hurdle.

The next year Jana was back again and this time she was at least not facing such a high profile opponent like Steffi Graf or Martina Hingis in the final. She however avenged her previous final defeat to Hingis defeating her in the semifinals enroute to the final. This time the opponent was the burly French women Natalie Tauziat. There was no doubt that Jana was to go in as the favourite but considering her previous stumbling blocks and the fact that she was nearing 30, the writing was clear that this would perhaps be the last chance ever for her to claim the coveted Wimbledon title which she so dearly wanted to hold. And at last it finally happened. Nervousness did not plague her this time as she quickly breezed through the match taking it in a straight set waltz. The moment had finally happened as all the tears and trauma had finally turned around and as much as it was a celebration, it was a huge sigh of relief for Jana because her dream had finally been fructified. After the nightmarish scenes in 1993 of breaking down in front of the Dutchess to again being outclassed by the Swiss Queen Martina Hingis in 1997, it almost looked as if this moment would never happen. But all of Wimbledon wanted Jana Novotna to one day win Wimbledon and she managed to do it in style albeit much later in her career. Jana's triumph is a cornerstone of resolve and not giving up despite everything being against her. Her win certainly goes down in Wimbledon's history as one of it's most cherishable tales.

Another dark horse winner who was eternally loved and rooted by the partisan Wimbledon crowd was the mercurial Croat Goran Ivanisevic. Goran had quite a feisty character who had a game well equipped to handle grass. His biggest undoing was his own self losing his temper and giving away crucial double faults. A young Ivanisevic had just entered his first final in 1992 defeating Pete Sampras to set up a finale clash with long haired Las Vegan Andre Agassi. It set up for an intriguing clash with the match going down the distance to the 5th set. Down 4-5 in the fifth set on his serve, Goran couldn't handle the pressure conceding 2 back to back double faults to make Agassi go up 0-30. Despite staving up a couple of points, Goran had lost the match in his head granting victory to Andre for his first ever major Grand Slam championship. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Goran who had come pretty close but couldn't control his nerves especially during the crucial 5th set.

Goran got back again to the final in 1994 and this time his opponent was the defending champion Pete Sampras. This turned out to be quite a straight forward fare for Pistol Pete who claimed victory in straight sets blanking Ivanisevic 6 zip in the final set. Though the first two sets were closely fought and were decided in the tie breaker, Goran couldn't again cope up becoming a cropper especially on those essential decisive points. Gorans next attempt at a Wimbledon final came again in 1998 against the same fancied Pete Sampras who was again the defending champion having won an awe inspiring 5th crown and gunning for his 6th and second straight 3 in a row triumph. This match had all the ebbs and flows going down the wire into the 5th set. Goran faltered yet again in the 5th set, this was certainly his best chance to stop Pete from unchartered glory but again those nerves flared up again and bitter mistakes in the form of defaults on crucial points put paid of his hopes once again. Ivanisevic was welled up with hollow all over and he knew he had thrown away his best chance ever possible and the distant dream of a Wimbledon trophy continued to elude despite 3 shots at the prize.

In the year 2001, Goran Ivanisevic was provided a wild card to enter in the tournament. To be honest, nobody expected him to make any great shakes and it appeared initially as it was just a final flurry for him to play in the tournament he loved so dearly but not able to capture. He came to SW19 ranked a distant #125 and there were no expectations whatsoever. Ivanisevic had a tough draw but started conquering his rivals one by one. His passage through to the quarter finals was also greeted by the news that his regular nemesis Pete Sampras gunning for a 5th straight and unenviable 8th title was vanquished by the up and coming Swiss Roger Federer. It was a coming of age for the Swiss Maestro who had stopped Pistol Pete from achieving glory once again and this win was a hallmark event for Federer who in the years to come would end up dominating the hallowed center court. The quarter finals saw him acing out the marauding Russian Marat Safin setting up a mouth watering clash against crowd favorite and local hero Tim Henman. Tim had just come off an impressive victory over Sampras's conqueror Roger Federer in the quarter finals and the raucous British crowd were all and out cheering for him to win and create history. The British were long awaiting a man of their own to win the hallowed championship and this seemed like a moment of reckoning for Tim. In a slug fest of a bout between Henman and Ivanisevic, Goran managed to keep his nerve intact edging out a superlative 5 set victory. After being hammered 6-0 in the 3rd set for Henman to take a 2 sets to 1 lead, it seemed too much of a proposition to climb but a miraculous rain break helped him to clear out his rear guard action claiming a crucial 4th set in a tight tie breaker and then winning the final set with a break.

Thus, Ivanisevic was back again in the final for the fourth time. It seemed pretty surreal considering he had virtually come here to have fun playing as a rank outsider. The final grand finale was against Australian Pat Rafter who was the losing finalist to Pete Sampras in the year before. Both these gentlemen were gunning to bag their first ever prestigious Wimbledon title. To add to this, rain played havoc moving the match to Monday. This match had virtually everything with fortunes fluctuating both sides constantly. The Croats and Aussies were cheering on for their local boys like crazy and the tension was unsurmountable. The fifth set kept stretching on with drama at peak and with Rafter serving at 7-7 and 15-30, Ivanisevic hit a picture perfect forehand past Rafter to go 15-40 and followed up with one more terrific shot back past to get the pivotal break and go up 8-7. Ivanisevic had fate on his hands but still he had to serve out to emerge the victor. Rafter was not willing to give in easily and another dreaded double default by Ivanisevic had Rafter leading at 15-30. Goran continued by serving another first fault but made up for it with a brilliant second serve ace levelling terms at 30-30. He followed it up with a rip snorter of an ace to go up 40-30 and gain his first match point. At this point, one could witness tears in Goran's eyes and the tension tumbling all over his body. And then Goran again obtained cold feet making up a double fault on match point to get it to deuce. He served again for a winning point to get to his second match point only to howler back with another double fault setting things apiece back at Deuce. This couldn't happen all over once again and the mind reminisced to the horror stories back in the bygone times and it was visible that Goran was struggling hard not to let emotions of the past curtail him once again. There was turmoil raging inside Goran's head and he wanted this badly come what may. With things in parity yet again, a drop shot by Rafter fell outside the side lines handing Ivanisevic his 3rd match point. You could see Ivanisevic sitting on the turf at the place where Rafter had hit it wide literally on his knees praying to the almighty above. Even he couldn't take it any longer with the trauma being unbearable. It seemed that if Goran would fail to convert yet again during the next point, doomsday was going to haunt him forever for the rest of his life. And again on the 3rd match point, a steadied unfazed loop shot by Rafter helped him get back on track to Deuce. Pat was chasing his own dreams and he certainly was in no mood to give up. It was beyond belief to witness the euphoric scenes happening right at the middle of this historic court. A great serve by Ivanisevic handed him Match point #4. But this time Goran was not willing to take time and soak in his emotions. He didn't want to waste too much of time and wanted to get done with the next service. He again served a fault on his first serve and got geared up for his second serve. And at last the moment of a lifetime happened. Rafter hit Goran's serve to the net erupting absolutely wild celebrations. Goran fell on the turf withering in happiness. It was truly a match for the ages stretching the distance on a Monday evening across 5 marathon sets that had drama unfolding across all directions. Ivanisevic's win appeared as if it was one of sport's greatest triumphs. Finally he had got the mickey off his back and got what he had been desiring but that which had been eluding him for so long.

Both Novotna's and Ivanisevic's victories were extremely special and deliciously sweet. They had to encounter tremendous adversity losing at the final hurdle time and again. Both of them were crowd pleasers and there was always an inkling that somehow they should be able to achieve their long last dream. Finally achieving the milestone was indeed a moment of delirium having faced gut wrenching despair in the years prior. The Wimbledon victories by Jana Novotna in 1998 and Goran Ivanisevic in 2001 certainly go down in Wimbledon's memory lane as one to savor for eternity.

Blank Chart Predictions from a Horoscope

Blank chart predictions are a method of horoscope analysis which largely works on energy exhibited or influence imbibed through the blending or combination of signs, houses and planets. The interesting thing to note is that for this kind of analysis, we do not take into account at all as to where the planets are placed in the horoscope. That's why it is coined as "Blank" meaning null or empty, hence placement of planets don't have a say.

It should however be remembered that planets play the most crucial role in any horoscope and based on it's static placement in the natal chart or it's transitory movement forms the fulcrum of identifying the fate of any horoscope. So it may beg the question as to how can any horoscope be viewed without even knowing where planets are placed in the horoscope? This is the catch in blank chart analysis.

This system gives a great insight on initial horoscope analysis by blending various energies and can give an overview of some of the basic and inherent qualities for those born in different ascendants. It is useful especially for disseminating the natural traits. A majority part of the analysis is identified by basing it on the 'Kalapurusha' chart which indicates the wheel of time along with knowing the state of planet where exaltation or debilitation happens and also fusing a little bit of the signification elements in to the mix.

However, it should always be kept in mind that placement of planets can completely alter the said understanding and hence one shouldn't be too cheeky in trying to interpret everything from just a blank chart. As a first frontier in chart analysis, blank chart predictions can give a heads up on the zone of life where an individual is more focused on or at least wanting to be. It can also be a great learning tool for budding astrologers as a nascent step towards having a basic idea of a particular native. The listed significations happen to be some of the fundamental classifications for each house. One must also keep in mind the linking of houses to extend the significations. For instance we know 2nd house denotes wealth and 9th is about Father. Thus 10th house which is 2nd from 9th will denote the wealth of the father. Likewise spouses profession can be ordained from the 4th house being the 10th house of profession from the 7th house of spouse. While doing predictions, an astrologer must be able to link various factors in order to generate relatable extended significations from each house.

With regard to the significations, each and every planet except the nodes is given the main portfolio of one of the houses with the outer planets from earth given more than one each whereas the inner planets are given one each. Jupiter has 4 main significations being the root signifier of 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. Mars and Saturn hold key portfolio for the general bad houses with Mars being given 3rd, 6th and Saturn being provided 8th and 12th. The four kendras are all given to Sun (1st), Moon (4th), Venus (7th) and Mercury (10th). However it should be remembered that a house has multiple significations and hence there can be secondary karakas as well for eg. the profession and karma area of 10th the signifier will be Saturn whereas when seeing the status, position, leadership etc we have to be see from purview of Sun. Likewise the luxuries associated with 4th house, Venus will take charge whereas things related to land and property, Mars will have a say. These also need to be factored in but as a first step the primary root karaka provided by Sage Parashara would be helpful in catching the crucial areas in the relevant houses.

The Zodiac signs have numerous classifications such as being categorized into odd/even, positive/negative, day/night, rising from head/back, ascension as short/medium/long, quality as sattwik/rajasic/tamasic, aim being Dharma/Artha/Kama/Moksha, type being quadruped/human/watery/insect etc., along with various divisions. Knowing these may also come in handy when knowing more innate features of zodiac signs. However the fundamental classification of rasis ruled by the respective planets and knowing their element and mobility can be extremely useful in making subtle predictions. Rahu and Ketu have not been considered as they do not own signs exclusively of their own and they are more known to give results based on the house or sign in which they are placed. Since blank charts do not consist of planets placement, these have not been considered.

Making Blank Chart Predictions
Lets now see how we can make some handy predictions for different signs using blank charts. Knowing essentials such as characteristic features of various signs, important representations of the different houses, the signifier and ruling lord of all the houses along with the exaltation and debilitation of each planet in the houses and signs are very important when it comes to making such blank chart predictions.

We shall see some random predictions that can be made using this method. For an Aries Ascendant, we can that they are more happy in work environment than home environment as the Ascendant Lord exalts in 10th house and debilitates in 4th house. At the same time since 10th lord debilitates in sign of Aries, we can also infer that they may face some problems relating to profession. Taking the case of Virgo Lagna, we can say these natives are naturally intelligent as Virgo is the only sign where Lagna Lord gets exalted in Lagna itself. However they may be rather poor in relationship matters as the Lagna Lord debilitates in 7th house. We can infer that Gemini & Sagittarius natives can have an extra liking towards 4th house matters like mother, education, vehicles etc as in these cases both Ascendant Lord and 4th Lord are ruled by one and the same planet Mercury for Gemini and Jupiter for Sagittarius. For a Gemini Lagna, the intensity is even more because the lord also gets exalted in the 4th house. Taking the case of a Pisces Ascendant, the Lagna Lord Jupiter gets exalted in the 5th house. Jupiter also happens to be the natural signifier of the 5th house. So it can be predicted that these natives can be really fond of children. For a Libra Lagna person, 7th house is Aries and we know that 7th house is all about relationships and Aries sign denotes energy and activeness. So we can say a Libra Ascendant native is very active when it comes to forging relationships. Similarly we know Taurus shows resources and 8th house talks about in laws, thus we can say Libra Ascendants can get plenty of resources from their in laws by blending sign and house energy. A Cancer Ascendant native has his 3rd sign as Virgo. 3rd represents writing/communication and Virgo can mean critical, analytical, perfection. Hence we can say a Cancer Ascendant native aims for perfectionism when it comes to writing skills. For a Scorpio Ascendant, Capricorn comes as 3rd House and Capricorn has all to do with structure, order, discipline. Hence we can infer that the younger sibling of a Scorpio native is very orderly and meticulous in approach. Likewise for a Capricorn native, Scorpio is the 11th house and natural 8th house. So these natives may have a group or network of friends who could be actively engaged in occult sciences. A Leo native, the ascendant lord gets debilitated in 3rd house and exalted in 9th house. So these natives may benefit from 9th house matters like father, fortune, luck etc. We can even go one step and say that the father of these natives may be very active as it's coming in Aries sign. On the other hand these natives may not gain from 3rd house matters since its debilitated. Hence we can say not much help from younger siblings who may be very diplomatic in nature because of Libra sign which may not bode well for Leo Ascendants. For Aquarius Ascendants, Pisces is their 2nd house of money. Hence we can say that these natives earn money from significations of Pisces which could be in the form of spirituality, healing etc. Pisces also means oceans and crossing the waters, hence finance flow can come through foreign lands.

Illustration of using Blank Chart Prediction
We will now do an illustration of Blank Chart prediction of one particular Ascendant say Virgo by breaking into diverse segments and analyze results purely based on the blending of different dimensions of the sign and house energies

- Natural Sign Traits
Virgo is a dual sign of earth nature. There are certain inherent characteristics of Virgo sign and from that we can infer that these natives will be analytical by nature viewing things in detail and wanting to attain perfection. They can be too self critical at times and get nervous very soon as the indecisiveness of dual sign creeps in. As the sign is ruled by Mercury, we can also say they may be of curious kind and mildly of a thinner disposition as Virgo rules the hips or waistline area which is underneath the belly and shows a reduction in body fluff around that side.

- Kala Purusha House Order
As per the Kala Purusha Order, Virgo happens to be the natural 6th house of the zodiac. We know 6th house represents fights, issues and hence we can expect Virgo natives to be naturally of an argumentative nature. They may be very competitive by spirit and always wanting to be victorious in every endeavor. They may disagree on a lot of things and it's very hard to convince these natives as they look at most things in a minute manner.

- Other Lordship Impact
For a Virgo Ascendant native, Mercury is the ruler of both the 1st and 10th house. As we know 1st is all about the self and 10th is to do with one's profession and livelihood. Since the same planet rules the 1st and the 10th, these natives will take their work very seriously and always looking for ways to meet their needs. Since the ruler is Mercury, few natural significations of the planet will also come into the picture like for instance these individuals being logical and calculative when it comes to professional matters. Likewise Jupiter rules both the 4th and 7th houses. 4th is about mother and 7th spouse. Hence a Virgo native may treat matters of mother and spouse equally with no discrimination and since Jupiter is the owner of both these houses, he may be very respectful and duty bound when it comes to such matters.

- Exaltation and Debilitation
Virgo is ruled by the sign of Mercury which exalts in Virgo itself in the first house and debilitates in the 7th house ruled by Pisces. Virgo is the only zodiac sign where the Ascendant ruler gets exalted in it's very own sign. Hence one can easily infer that such natives will be extremely intelligent due to this proposition. However since Lagna Lord debilitates in the opposite 7th house, they may be pretty weak when dealing with other people be it with their spouse or relating to any business negotiations.

- Karaka Theory
Each house has a primary root karaka and for the 10th house the main signifier happens to be Mercury especially relating to matters such as to do with gaining honours and achievements. The Karaka of 10th Mercury gets exalted in 1st house but gets debilitated in 7th house. We know the 1st house is the self and 7th is about dealing with others. This clearly highlights that such natives are better off doing their own service than indulging in business activities since the karaka gets uncomfortable when it is dealing with different people. The primary signifier of 3rd house is Mars mainly to do with courage, valor etc and we see that it gets exalted in the 5th house of Capricorn. So these natives may be pretty creative when exhibiting their skills but however may not be gaining much due to the karaka being debilitated in the floating up and down 11th house of Cancer.

- Progression Based Approach
In general, we have 12 houses in a horoscope and every year of life is said to dictate one sign each. Hence in the 1st year Virgo will be activated with 2nd being Libra, 3rd Scorpio and so on till 12th being Leo. The order repeats again with Virgo activating the 13th year and so on and so forth. We know Gemini represents changes and happens to be the 10th sign for a Virgo native. Thus in ages of 22, 34, 46 etc. we can deduce that these natives would have had a change in their work place. For instance 4th house will be activated during year 4,16,28,40,52,64,76,88,100 etc. During the above mentioned ages, a lot of 4th house significations will take place such as completion of education, buying vehicles, acquiring property etc. However this rule should be seen with a pinch of salt as a lot depends on the sign placement of Sagittarius and it's lord Jupiter also for things to get activated.

- Blending of Signs and Houses
This is fundamentally the most important rule and forms the crux of the prediction analogy behind analyzing blank or blind charts. Each house is to be studied based on where it falls in the natural zodiac and accordingly the sign energy needs to be blended with the house in question. The first house of Virgo happens to be the 6th house of the natural zodiac and we know the 6th pertains to difficulty. So these natives will naturally be difficult to please and have questions for every matter. The 2nd house falls in Libra which is the natural 7th sign. As Libra represents choice, these natives could also be pretty choosy when it comes to their food habits. Thus we can infer that these natives will be pretty balanced when dealing with money and family matters. Since the 3rd house falls in the natural 8th house, it can be inferred that these natives will be quite secretive with regard to their communication or efforts put in. As the 4th house is natural 9th house of exploring, these individuals will like to research about things like vehicles, properties in much depth. The mother of such natives can be quite religious as it happens to be sign of Sagittarius denoting belief system. The 5th house happens to be the natural 10th house of Capricorn and hence with regard to matters of children, it can be said that they would be strict and bring them up with discipline. Coming to 6th house which happens to be natural 11th house, it can be said that these natives can gain from court cases or any disputes prevailing. From another angle, since the 6th house rules diseases and falls in the sign of Aquarius that represents legs especially the shanks, it could be said that these natives may be having issues relating to that part of the legs. The 7th house happens to be the natural 12th house of loss and hence these natives may feel the pinch when dealing with other people. Incidentally the other rules already pointed to a weakness when dealing with 7th house matters and this only exacerbates the issue all the more. The 8th house happens to be Aries which is the 1st sign of the zodiac and connotes new beginnings. With regard to hidden and secretive issues, they may want to try newer approaches and put lots of efforts to know such things. The 9th house happens to be the 2nd sign of Taurus denoting support and resources. It can be inferred that the father of the native can be a very resourceful person or even the native's teachers being virtuous. The 10th house is about work and happens to be the natural 3rd sign of Gemini. It is pretty easy to state that the work environment will be quite communicative. Multiple professions can also be indicated from Gemini's duality trait. From the 11th house that happens to be the 4th house of natural zodiac, it can be said that these natives could be emotionally connected to their social network. Some sort of gains can also arise through 4th house matters like mother, properties etc. Since Leo happens to be the 12th house and the natural 5th house, it can be said that these natives will incur expenditure to maintain status quo and for the sake of their children or any other creative pursuits.

- Extended Significations
Through the blending of signs and houses, we were able to predict various facets pertaining to an individuals life. By extending this theory we can also briefly predict about matters relating to the natives family members. For instance, father is represented by the 9th house and for a Virgo native, 9th house falls in the sign of Taurus through which we were able to infer that the father could be a resourceful person. Now if we want to know about the wealth capacity of the father, we would have to look at the 2nd sign from the 9th house of Virgo which happens to be Gemini. Now we know Gemini represents variety and multiple sources and hence it can be said that the dad of the native may be earning wealth through various avenues. Likewise other areas can also be decoded by linking houses for instance to know about spouses profession we need to see the 10th from the 7th sign of Pisces which would be the sign of Sagittarius for a Virgo Ascendant.

- Sign and House Energy for Other Ascendants
We should also keep in mind that Virgo would be ruling a particular house for the other ascendants and taking care of specific portfolios based on the house it is associated. Using the energy of Virgo, we would be able to work out relatable predictions based on the house of Virgo. For instance a Libra Ascendant native will have Virgo ruling the 12th house of expenditure and we know Virgo happens to be the natural 6th house of the zodiac. Hence we can say that Libra Ascendant natives may be incurring lots of spends with regard to paying their debts, dealing with enemies, diseases etc. A Capricorn Ascendant will have Virgo as it's 9th sign that connotes one's teachers. Since it falls in sign of Virgo which is all about paying attention to detail, we can say that the Gurus/Father/Mentor of Capricorn Ascendant natives will be very meticulous and well planned.

Conclusion
These are just a glimpse of how predictions can be made simply out of blank charts. By blending various energies of sign, house, planets majority of predictions can be performed through the inherent cosmos prevailing within this framework. If one is skilled and able to use the creative forte to the best of ability, numerous predictions can just flow unendingly and a plethora of results can be foretold simply through the ascendant alone. However as emphasized earlier, these may not always work and everything can change in a dramatic manner based on actual placement of planets in the chart. The blank chart predictions can give a high level insight especially when a planet is actually not placed in the house or sign being analyzed. If there are planets placed, results can get altered significantly and caution needs to be exercised. Thus predictions using this methodology needs to be thread carefully and used judiciously in order to obtain the best results possible.
